Have you
ever been to an island shaped like a dolphin? I haven’t either,
but reading Island of the Blue
Dolphins by Scott
O` Dell made me feel like I was on the island. This Newbery book is told by
a young girl, Karana, that got left
behind when a ship comes
and takes the tribe of Indians on the island to a "strange
country". While Karana lives alone
on the island she
faces many dangerous things, like wild dogs. Karana has to
kill quite a
few dogs. Then she befriends one of
the dogs and calls the dog Rontu. For many days she waits for
another ship to
come and take her to "the strange country" to be with her people.
The
genre of this book is historical fiction. The theme is survival
because Karana had to face many dangerous things and learn how
to make weapons. I really liked this book because it was brave
of Karana go through what she did. If you want to
learn about true survival you have to read this book!
