READING Help!

  •
  • HIGHLIGHT key words or phrases in text.
  • Place a clear “overhead” over pages in a textbook to allow for highlighting!
  • Color code key words in questions to match answers within a text.
  • Use a 3x5 index card for “blocking.”  This helps with visual tracking and sweep.
  •  Provide “Buddy” readers for students reading below grade level to ensure students are exposed to curriculum even though they may not be able to read the text.
  • Allow students to follow along in the text as they listen to book/text on tape.  (Houghton-Mifflin L.A. program has texts on tape and there are many audio books available for FREE at the public library!)
  • Allow for oral response when assessing reading comprehension.
  • Have students illustrate new vocabulary words to help them remember meanings.
