Following Directions Help!

 

VISUALS, VISUALS, VISUALS PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System).  I suggest the software “Writing with Symbols” or "Boardmaker Pro" Highlight directions on EVERY worksheet. Pair auditory instructions with visual representations. “Chunk” multi-step directions into smaller parts. Provide Mini-Schedules and allow students to “check off “tasks when completed. Provide pictures whenever possible. List directions “Step-by-Step rather than all at once. Check for understanding. Repeat directions and ask students to repeat them back to you. Prompt students with beginning of directions and allow them to finish the statement to show their understanding. Make eye contact with students before giving directions. Allow students to take breaks during tasks if needed.  Break large tasks into smaller parts. Know how and when to ask for help.
