Following Directions Help!
 

  • VISUALS, VISUALS, VISUALS
  • PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System).  I suggest the software “Writing with Symbols” or "Boardmaker Pro"
  • Highlight directions on EVERY worksheet.
  • Pair auditory instructions with visual representations.
  • “Chunk” multi-step directions into smaller parts.
  • Provide Mini-Schedules and allow students to “check off “tasks when completed.
  • Provide pictures whenever possible.
  • List directions “Step-by-Step rather than all at once.
  • Check for understanding.
  • Repeat directions and ask students to repeat them back to you.
  • Prompt students with beginning of directions and allow them to finish the statement to show their understanding.
  • Make eye contact with students before giving directions.
  • Allow students to take breaks during tasks if needed. 
  • Break large tasks into smaller parts.
  • Know how and when to ask for help.
