BEHAVIOR Help!

  • Chart the ABC's.  This will help pick target behaviors to change.  Sometimes you'll even identify a cause that can be easily changed.

A: Identify the Antecedent to the behavior (often times it’s something the child can tell you if you just ask!)  The antecedent is the event that precedes the behavior.

      B: Identify the Behavior

      C: Consequence to the behavior.

  • Model appropriate target behaviors.
  • Generate a behavior contract with the student and site specific examples of appropriate target behavior and inappropriate behavior.
  • Provide immediate reinforcement for appropriate behavior.  Start with short intervals 2 - 5 minutes to start!
  • Develop Incentive programs (stamps, stickers, smiley faces etc.) 10 - 20 stamps = treat.
  • When using tokens there are 2 schools of thought...

           1. Give a token every time the appropriate target behavior is displayed.  Pre-determine a specified number of tokens that will earn the student an incentive.

           2. Start with a given number of tokens every day or at the beginning of each session.  The student keeps all of the tokens as long as the appropriate target behavior is displayed.  A token is taken away when appropriate behavior is not displayed.  The student receives the incentive if they have tokens at the end of the day/session.
