Welcome Back!

Dear
Parents,
Welcome back to another year with us at Mesa Verde Middle School. Our
seventh grade team has carefully prepared a challenging and creative academic
program that is designed to further thinking skills. We eagerly look
forward to a successful and rewarding year working with your child. Each
student's effort, responsibility, and initiative will prove to be the keys to
his/her success/achievement this year.
The seventh grade curriculum includes the study of world history (from the fall
of Rome through the Renaissance), literature, writing, vocabulary, geography,
and grammar . Students will participate in a variety of
learning experiences designed to teach the main content and encourage and develop higher level thinking/speaking
skills, often using integrated fields of study.
Developing and using the skills of a successful and conscientious citizen are
essential steps at this stage of a student's academic and social growth. [Mesa
Verde Cit./Effort Scale]
With this goal in mind, success in our classes will be determined, to a large
extent, by the effort, self-discipline, and organization shown by the individual
student. Your guidance and support at home are invaluable for the
development of study habits that promote these characteristics. Rules have
been established to develop an atmosphere which promotes academic achievement
and social development . Accordingly, we expect students to be attentive,
courteous, and respectful to all adults and all children at all times. We
also expect the following of our students:
1. Be punctual
2. Be prepared
3. Follow directions immediately
4. Respect the rights of all others
5. Listen attentively, work quietly, and
participate appropriately

All assignments must be complete, of acceptable levels of quality, according to
instructions and turned in on the assigned due date to receive full credit.
Please, do not turn in work early. Make-up work for students with excused
absences from school (see MVMS Binder Reminder) will be considered for full
credit, if the assignment is completed on the adjusted due date designated by
the teacher. Check with each of your teachers for his/her policy on the
matter. (Mr. Sykes will require the work on the first day
of the student’s return unless prior arrangements have been made due to
long-term illness.)
Absences can cause serious gaps in information and cause students to fall
behind. Remember, for an absence less than three days, the student is
responsible for calling his/her study buddies for information on missed work.
Longer absences will require an early call to the office to request homework.
Please monitor the online calendar for
your particular class on my (Mr. Sykes’)
web page.
We are excited about the new year and look forward to meeting with you at Back-to-School Night.

Sincerely,
Dave Sykes
