History Chap I Group Test
Assigned-Wed. 08/25/10,
due-Wed. 09/08/10
Task breakdown/step by step timeline:
{Parents- I have taken the liberty of doing this for our fist assignment but the student will be expected to organize themselves from this point on. If your child needs more structure , make a habit of sitting down with them at the beginning of each project to set up a timeline like this and meet with them regularly to keep them on track.}
1. Wed., 08/25/10 In Class- Assignment is outlined and gone over in class.
2. 08/25/10 At Home- Go over this online and make sure you understand it. Write down any questions you may have. All students will be expected to write at least three/3 questions and turn them in.
3. 08/26/10 In Class- Turn in your questions. Mr. Sykes will go over these and answer these in class (as time allows. Students should come in after school and see me today if they still don't understand something.
4. 08/27/10 In Class- Physical items will be in the classroom for the first time. Your groups will be posted and you will have a few min. to meet and get to know who you will be working with and assign tasks to be completed by Mon. (08/30/10). Everyone should write these into their assignments sched. at this point so they don't forget.
5. 08/27/10 - 08/29/10 At Home- Students will complete and carefully pack their assigned groupwork so that they don't forget it on Mon. (08/30/10) when they meet with their groups.
6. 08/30/10- 09/06/10 In Class- You begin working as groups using the work you have prepared and brought in for today (assigned by your groups). This will continue throughout the week. The amount of class time available will be decided by student cooperation and adherence to posted group work rules. Note uncooperative classes enjoy less class time and therefore choose to do more of this assignment at home. Choose wisely.
7. 08/30/10- 09/06/10 At Home- Work on whatever need to be done or finished from class time according to your group's timeline.
8. 09/06/10 In Class- You will arrive at class today with your presentation 100%completed and turn in your PowerPoint (project) first thing after the tardy bell. Note- you may e-mail these to me but you need to make sure that it arrives and I am able to open/save/play the presentation on the day it is due.

In/with your groups:
Roleplay- You are a team of Archaeologists and historians working at a dig site in N. England (the ancient lands of the Celtic Carvetti tribe). It has been known/accepted for many years that the Romans built and used a major road that ran through your site. What isn’t as well known or agreed upon by historians is who used this road. Your biggest competitor (the team from Oxford) has just released a paper that puts forth the belief that Northern British (Christian) pilgrims and merchants used this rout exclusively as a safe rout to the old city of London. They further hypothesize that this section of Britain was relatively free of civil strife and tribal warfare during this period (200 AD/CE) of Roman Rule in Britain.
GOAL: Your Job is to prove or dispute their claim based upon the sources/artifacts that have been found on your dig and dated to this period [the ones that I have presented and explained to you]. Don’t share your ideas with other teams. Answer/complete the following with your team… Remember your work must be turned in as a power point presentation first thing on Thurs. 09/24/09
A. Make a PowerPoint- How do your sources support or dispute the Oxford theory? Explain this to us. Make it clear!
B. TASK I- Categorize (make a chart) the sources ( each one) as-
1. written
2. non written
3. primary
4.secondary
5. physical evidence/material culture
Remember- The items/sources may fit in to more than one category and you need to explain why it is that type of source.
C. TASK II- Make sure you include a brief explanation of why these fit each category. Remember your colleagues at Oxford don’t really want to believe your evidence so you must be thorough and convincing with your argument.
D. TASK III- After you have categorized each article/artifact/source, give a detailed written and if possible visual description (at least a paragraph) of each to present with your finished work. Remember to use your best descriptive writing skills. Below are some pictures, diagrams, etc. to remind you of the items that will be available for viewing/study in class. {Remember they are not always the objects themselves but similar objects.} Use your class time productively and wisely.
TASK IV – Choose one of the following.
Ask yourselves- Do you, as a team, have enough strong evidence (below) to write a supporting article or will you present and support a different theory of the usage and history of this section of Roman road at 200A.D.? Why or why not? Be specific. [Hint- I will be easier for you to do this if you use the strategies and form you already leaned in writing for "persuasive essay!"]
If you feel that there is evidence for a different view of what was going on there and then, present your view and back it up with the evidence you have found. Convince me using the physical evidence provided!
OR
If you feel that your evidence supports the Oxford view restate their view and use your findings to support their theory. Convince me using the physical evidence provided!
All findings are due completed and ready to turn in as a power point by the beginning of class on Thurs.,09/07/10.
