It
isn't Stone Phillips or Jane Pauley whose news show is captivating the
students of Creekside Elementary School. It is a group of 3rd, 4th
and 5th grade students who are writing, filming, editing and broadcasting
a very professional looking news program monthly on their
campus. Staff and students at Creekside watch the live show
from the classroom monitors with great anticipation!
|
| In a recent broadcast on Feb.14, their 20 minute
program consisted of taped footage of their Jogathon, a live
interview about "Pennies for Pasta" charity event with the
sponsoring teacher, a live hula hoop contest, and lots of more fun.
A special taped segment of their show, "On the Road" again,
visited a Creekside teacher at her home. It was fun to meet her dog
and see how messy her own son's room was!
The broadcast not only informs students and
staff of what's going on, but allows for a greater sense of
community and school pride. |

The broadcast team invites
different classes to watch the broadcast being done. This
chance to be in the "studio audience" often gives
other students the desire to become part of the the process. Mr. Joe Erpelding, amazing kindergarten
teacher and the team's sponsor, is
able to work with a group of students to produce a new show every
month. He asks students to write an essay about why they would like
to work in the broadcast group, and then selects kids to train for this
great activity. Experienced veteran students train students who are
new to the team to create this great show.
Students love this opportunity because it's
fun. The adults around them love this opportunity because they see
how the kids are learning to write and speak well to communicate to a
large audience, work together to finish a creative project and plan out
steps needed to make deadlines. These are all certainly real world
skills! This is powerful learning facilitated through very cool
technology . |
