"Education is not the filling of a pail

but the lighting of a fire."

I believe the classroom should be a place where each child feels accepted and valued. It should be a place where they can feel safe enough to ask questions and feel confident in their ability to learn. In my classroom, students are taught to respect each other and to recognise and appreciate their differences so that everyone can learn, work and play happily together. Students work individually, in small groups, together with partners, and in a whole class setting. My goal is that my students become lifelong learners as they discover that they can be independent thinkers and problem solvers.

Here is a little information about who I am and what I like to do outside school. I grew up in South Africa and moved to the United States with my husband and two daughters, Tracy and Belinda, nineteen years ago. We first lived in Seattle before moving to sunny San Diego where we fell in love with the climate and the people here. I have included a photo of my family for everyone to see my two daughters and my husband on the happy occasion of Tracy's graduation. Both my daughters are married and living in San Diego. I have one beautiful granddaughter who is 6 months old. Her name is Annalise and she is adorable! We also have a grandson on the way - due early September. We can hardly wait to see him. I will tell you his name after he is born because Belinda and Brandon keep changing their minds about his name.

My most favorite past time is to curl up with a good book. I particularly like historical fiction, but enjoy many other genres and have a strong appreciation for a well written book. I also enjoy sewing, singing, listening to music, camping, and attending church.
