Advanced Placement United States History

Summer Assignment

Directions:

The design of this assignment is to act as a springboard into our analysis of American history.  You will develop a detailed understanding of the reason, impact and long-term effects of European exploration and colonization of the North American continent and the conflicts surrounding the creation of the United States.

Part I.  Background Information

Read Chapters 1-5 in The American Pageant (this is the APUSH textbook—it can be checked out from the library).

·         There are a series of on-line quizzes for Chapters 1-5.  You must first register with nicenet.org.

Class Name: APUSH 09-10         Your Class Key: 02673Z5A74

·         Take each of the quizzes for chapters 1-5.  Record them on a piece of paper to be turned in the first day of school.  Reading quizzes are a constant part of APUSH.  For this, please do your own work.  Will I know the difference?  Possibly not.  The main focus is to know this information and you cannot do it from someone else’s answers.  We will cover the main points of the first five chapters during the first two weeks of the semester.

Part II.  Supplemental reading

Purchase a copy of 10 Days That Unexpectedly Changed America by Steven M. Gillon.  There will be many copies for sale from last year’s APUSH’ers.  Come to E-3 to pick one up before school ends (price usually varies but around $5 used) or borrow one over the summer and buy a cheap copy at the beginning of the year.

·         Read Chapter one, Massacre at Mystic (pgs 7-28).  Write a one-page reaction to the event discussing its significance to American history.  This will be turned in conjunction with the multiple choice questions above.  We will be reading the remaining chapters throughout the year.
