Not exactly holiday entertainment, but ….
Get together with friends and neighbors and view an exciting classic movie (Gettysburg) or curl up with a cup of hot cocoa and read the Killer Angels 0r (Gods and Generals, or The Last Full Measure.) This will greatly enhance our discussion and review of the Civil War.
Questions to ponder as you peruse.
Ø What was Lee’s intent and why?
Ø Discuss the significance of the missing JEB Stuart.
Ø Describe the moral of the Southern troops.
Ø What was the problem with the troops from Maine? Why was this significant?
Ø What was Buford’s and Chamberlain’s predicament?
Ø Why did the Southern attack on Seminary Ridge fail?
Ø What is the disagreement between Longstreet and Lee?
Ø Why does Lee press the attack?
Ø Describe Pickett’s charge. Include the problem with location and terrain.
Ø If Lee would have listened to Longstreet, could this have changed the outcome of the war?
(The questions above only pertain to Killer Angels or Gettysburg.)
Other options for those who can not obtain a copy of Gettysburg: Glory (R-rated). It shows the establishment of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment: The first African-American Union unit. Gone with the Wind. Actually a pro-Southern account of the war era but somewhat useful. Check for the bias.
These questions do not have to be written out. However, you must be able to discuss these questions fully upon our return after the break. Pay close attention to the personalities of the commanders.
