Beginning of the Year Frequently Asked Questions

School Year 2008-09

The ASES (After School Safety & Education) Program is free and provides a fun, safe, stimulating environment for students whose parents cannot be home when their children return from school.  Studies show that participation in the ASES Program increases students’ attachment to their schools, improves test scores, and keeps kids out of trouble.

We are pleased to offer a free before and after-school program.  In accordance with the intent of the state legislation that provides funding for the Poway Unified School District’s After School and Safety Program (ASESP), it is expected that students attend the after-school program every day for the full range of hours offered (2:25-6:00 PM) or a minimum of 9 hours per week.  We really need your support on the minimum hours; please take it into consideration when planning your pick-up routine.

The California ASES grant that funds this free program requires families to document any late arrival (after 6:00 AM) in the morning, or early release (before 6:00 PM) in the afternoon.  The PUSD policy requires that parents or students document the appropriate reason for late arrival/early release on the daily attendance sheets.  The reasons will be posted near the attendance sheets for easy reference.

Reasons for late arrival/early release:

1 Safety Issue (walk home before dark, transportation arrangements, etc.)

2 Family/Personal (childcare needs, emergencies, etc.)

3 Medical/Dental

4 Outside Commitment (sports, lessons, church, etc.)

School rules.  We enforce the school rules including the Acceptable Use Agreement for the use of computers and the Internet. One exception is that students are allowed to make and receive cell phone calls before and after school

Sports.  The sports program does not include any “cuts.”  Each season typically runs for six weeks.  Practices are held M-Th 3:30-4:30.  (We have changed the start time to allow students to access the many academic and enrichment activities scheduled 2:25-3:30.) We ask students to plan to attend at least 75% of the practices to participate in the District events.

What do you need to do to enroll your child in the After-school Program? Fill out the yellow PUSD permission form [included in your Meadowbrook registration packet].  Turn it in to the MBMS office.  You will not be contacted ahead of time.  Students simply attend the program.

The program is centered in the school library.  This means that the library is open until 6:00 PM nearly every school day (there will be a few exceptions due to faculty meetings and book fairs).  Students may work on their homework at a time that works best with their other interests and their individual needs.  Occasionally, a student may even use the library the entire time in order to complete a large project.  Our goal is to have students go home with their homework completed without sacrificing their involvement in extracurricular activities.

Students who stay after 2:30 must be involved in one of the scheduled activities or with a teacher or staff member.  Students may not leave campus and then return unless accompanied by a parent/guardian.

What does your child’s time at the after-school program look like?

What can parents do to help us be successful?

About the coordinator:  This will be my fifth year as a Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA).  I taught Basic Education at Meadowbrook for nine years before becoming a TOSA. In addition to ASES, I also work with Meadowbrook’s drug awareness program, character education program, and the Student Assistance Team.  I integrate all these facets into the program to create a variety of activities.  Students get to choose their activities; however, you can certainly suggest to your child to attend one or more of the academic support classes!  If you need to contact me, email is preferred.  Please keep in mind that receiving phones calls after school is difficult as I spend as much time with the students as possible.

We look forward to working with your child this year!
