Beginning of the Year Frequently Asked Questions
UPDATES:
June 10 - even though the weather is less than ideal, we will still go to Knotts. They are open even in drizzle, and at least the students will be dressed to get wet and we won't need as much sunscreen! I would recommend wearing swim shirts over suits if you have them.
There will be program on the last day of school, June 11 11:10-6:00. We have a free trip to Knotts Soak City in Chula Vista planned for our regular ASES students! No charge for admission or the bus. Permission slips are due by June 9, 2009. The bus will leave MBMS at 11:30 and return at 6:00. Additional information about last day of school program. Phone number on last day of school is 858-748-0802 x2811.
Registration for 2009-10 - There is nothing to do at this point to register your child for next year's program. We will be at the registration days August 11-13, 2009 at MBMS and you can complete the forms for your child then. Don't worry about space.
School Year 2009-10 ASES Program Funding: the money for our program comes from the state as a categorical fund. ASES is a tier one categorical fund (like Title I), which means that the money cannot be absorbed into the general fund for other needs at the district or school level. ASES funding and our program looks secure for next year. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask! cdonnelly@powayusd.com
Summer Program - there will not be summer school at Meadowbrook this summer; therefore there will not be an ASES program during the summer. Parents will need to make other arrangements for their children. Program will resume on the first day of school in August.
School Year 2009-10
The ASES (After School Safety & Education) Program is free and provides a fun, safe, stimulating environment for students whose parents cannot be home when their children return from school. Studies show that participation in the ASES Program increases students’ attachment to their schools, improves test scores, and keeps kids out of trouble.
We are pleased to offer a free before and after-school program. In accordance with the intent of the state legislation that provides funding for the Poway Unified School District’s After School and Safety Program (ASESP), it is expected that students attend the after-school program every day for the full range of hours offered (2:25-6:00 PM) or a minimum of 3 days and 9 hours per week. We really need your support on the minimum hours; please take it into consideration when planning your pick-up routine.
The California ASES grant that funds this free program requires families to document any late arrival (after 6:00 AM) in the morning, or early release (before 6:00 PM) in the afternoon. The PUSD policy requires that parents or students document the appropriate reason for late arrival/early release on the daily attendance sheets. The reasons will be posted near the attendance sheets for easy reference.

School rules. We enforce the school rules including the Acceptable Use Agreement for the use of computers and the Internet. One exception is that students are allowed to make and receive cell phone calls before and after school.
Sports. The sports program does not include any “cuts.” Each season typically runs for six weeks. Practices are held M-Th 3:30-4:30. We ask students to attend at least 75% of the practices to participate in the District events.
What do you need to do to enroll your child in the After-school Program? Fill out the PUSD permission form that will be included in your Meadowbrook registration packet. Turn it in to the MBMS during the registration days August 11-13, 2009 or the office after the school year begins. You will not be contacted ahead of time. Students simply attend the program.
The program is centered in the school library. This means that the library is open until 6:00 PM every school day! Students may work on their homework at a time that works best with their other interests and their individual needs. Occasionally, a student may even use the library the entire time in order to complete a large project. Our goal is to have students go home with their homework completed without sacrificing their involvement in extracurricular activities.
Students who stay after 2:30 must be involved in one of the scheduled activities or with a teacher or staff member. Students may not leave campus and then return unless accompanied by a parent/guardian.
What does your child’s time at the after-school program look like?
What can parents do to help us be successful?
About the coordinator: This is my sixth year as a Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA). I taught Basic Education at Meadowbrook for nine years before becoming a TOSA. In addition to ASES, I also work with Meadowbrook’s drug awareness program, character education program, and the Student Assistance Team. I integrate all these facets into the program to create a variety of activities. Students get to choose their activities; however, you can certainly suggest to your child to attend one or more of the academic support classes! If you need to contact me, email is preferred. Please keep in mind that receiving phones calls after school is difficult as I spend as much time with the students as possible.
We look forward to working with your child this year!
