What math concepts will we learn this year?

In kindergarten, students will encounter many opportunities to develop "number sense".  This is the basic understanding of how numbers work.  Some concepts we will focus on are:

  • the relationship between quantities and numbers, i.e. that 10 shells can be counted and named "10"

  • comparing quantities, i.e. what number is more/less

  • counting, recognizing, naming and ordering numbers to 100

  • knowing how to attack simple addition and subtraction problems and representing with a picture and number sentence, i.e. using objects (like counters) to count up to the total or symbols (dots on paper) to draw a picture of the problem

  • estimating within reason

Other math concepts we will concentrate on this year are:

  • identifying, describing, and extending patterns (AB, ABB, ABC, AAB, etc.)
  • collecting data and recording the results using tallies, pictures, and graphs
  • identifying and describing common geometric objects
  • naming the days of the week and the months of the year
  • using a ruler to measure to the nearest inch
  • skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s

Number formation

Number formation is really tricky for some kids.  Being able to write numbers quickly will help with math fluency.  Number fluency is important because the student doesn't have to labor over the formation of each number when performing higher level tasks, such as addition, subtraction, problem solving, etc.  Here are the rhymes we use to help the students remember how to form each number:

1 - One is fun (start from the top and go DOWN)

2 - Around and back on a railroad track

3 - Around the tree, around the tree, that's the way to make a three

4 - Down, across, then down some more, that's the way to make a four

5 - Backwards, down, then around, make a five without a sound

6 - Roll a hoop and make a loop

7 - Across the sky and down from heaven, that's the way to make a seven

8 - Make an "s" and then don't wait, go back up and close the gate

9 - Make a "c" and then a line, that's the way to make a nine
