It's fun to live in
Poway because we have such a great history. We have these cool Indians who lived
here. Can you guess which tribe they were?
Navajo?
Kumeyaay? Cherokee?
Haawka, this means
"Hello" in Kumeyaay language. If you guessed Kumeyaay, you guessed right.
The Kumeyaay lived in groups of 15 to 30 "iikwich, siny, and elymaam" (men,
women, and children). These people probably lived by water and if it ran out they
would move to another place.
You can find evidence
throughout the hills and valleys that proves that the Kumeyaay lived in Poway. On a
walk in our hills you may find "pawiiy's" (arrowheads), clay pottery pieces, and
"ehpii" or "metates" which were bowls formed in huge rocks from the
Kumeyaay grinding acorns into acorn meal. You can find out more about our Poway
Indian history at the new library and at the Poway Heritage Museum. Or you could
take a hike in Mission Trails Park in San Diego like our class did and learn a lot about
the plants the Kumeyaay used.
