Welcome to the new Writing With Style!
Print Version

The Poway Unified School District (PUSD) Writing with Style Manual was developed to support student writing and research. PUSD has adopted the Modern Language Association (MLA) style for all grade levels. This website follows the seventh edition of the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers. Notable changes to this edition include:
  • No More Underlining - MLA recommends italicizing titles.
  • URLS No Longer Required - MLA no longer requires URLs. However, writers are encouraged to provide a URL if the citation information does not lead readers to easily find the source. Although not required, many teachers will request that the URLs be included in your source information.
  • Pagination - Writers no longer have to worry about whether publications use continuous pagination or not. "If possible, give the inclusive page numbers or, when pagination is not continuous, the first page number and a plus sign; if pagination is not available use n. pag." (MLA Handbook sec. 5.6.4).
  • Publication Medium - Every source will have a medium of publication. Most sources will be listed as Print or Web, but other possibilities include Performance, DVD, or TV. The medium of publication will appear at the end of most sources. However, Web sources will be followed by the date of access and URL (if requested by teacher).

  • New Abbreviations - Most (including web) sources require a publisher name, a date of publication, and/or page numbers. When no publisher name appears use N.p. for no publisher given. When there is no date of publication, write n.d. for no date. For online journals that appear only online (no print version) or on databases that do not provide pagination, write n. pag. for no pagination.
N.p. no publisher given
n.d. no date
n. pag. no pagination
We gratefully thank the following PUSD teachers and teacher librarians for their work on this revision: Will Bailey, Katherine Powell, Divona Roy, Sue Sheldon, Erica Turner, and Erika Webb. Special thanks to district web developer Millie Swain for her design assistance.
The PUSD style manual has been through many format changes and revisions. Historically it was inspired by William Strunk Jr. and E. B. White's The Elements of Style and Writer's Inc: A Student Handbook for Writing & Learning by Patrick Sebranek, Verne Meyer and Dave Kemper.

This manual is a work in progress.
