PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

First I would like to take the opportunity to let you know how honored I am to step into the role of Principal. Westview has been my home for the last nine years, and I look forward to continuing the outstanding work that Westview has become known for around the country.

Dawn Kastner prepared the following message for the PTSA Newsletter prior to moving over to her new position at Mt. Carmel High School.

Thank you,

Todd Cassen

Principal

December 3, 2010

Today was a day of emotional highs and lows.  I started the morning by listening to our student vocal groups sing some of their holiday concert music.  The smiling faces and beautiful music stayed with me as I visited other classrooms and enjoyed watching the wonderful learning experiences that were occurring.  My buoyant mood was sadly transformed when I received a heartbreaking email from our new superintendent, Dr. Collins, informing us that our recently retired superintendent, Dr. Phillips had passed away.  Don was an incredible educator and leader, and his influence on this district was profound.   I am grateful for the many things I learned from Don.

One of Don’s key goals was college readiness for all, and I’m proud of the effort I see students putting in every day to reach that goal.  I wanted to share an email I received last week from our receptionist:

“Today I had a phone call from a prospective parent who is a teacher at [a local community college] and is looking at moving into our boundaries.  She said that she wants her daughter to come to our school because as a teacher she sees how prepared our students are and she appreciates what a great job our staff does to prepare the students for college.  She told me that she does not get the blank stare from the Westview students when she is teaching that she gets from so many others. They are mature and it is a joy to read the work they turn in.”

Finally I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate the impressive number of Westview students who took the SAT in October and received perfect scores of 800 on at least one of the three sections of the test:  Hedda Bates, Aleyni Cerezo, Tony Chen, Lydia Chin, George Du, Sean Fowler, Christine Li, Alexander Lin, Joy Liu, Kavitha Lobo, Nathan Siegel, Benjamin Statz, Nicholas Sun, Brenda Tang, Thuy Tran, Lillian Wang, Benjamin Yu, Shannon Zhang, Peter Zhao, and Jason Zhu.   Kudos to 11th graders Christine Li and Nathan Siegel for each earning a perfect score of 2400 on the SAT!

On behalf of the Westview community, I wish all of our Wolverine families a happy and fulfilling 2011.  May this be your best year ever!

Dawn Kastner

NAVY JROTC

Westview Navy JROTC rocks!!!

Two hardworking cadets have been awarded ROTC Scholarships for 2011/12 - Allison Adamos to USD and Connor Oberrick to either Duke, North Carolina or Vanderbilt.   Those are $180,000 scholarships and by the end of the year we should have at least two more!

The unit has been mixing plenty of competition with pleasure.  In November 35 cadets flew to Hawaii on a Navy C-40 transport (a 737 in the civilian world) to visit the USS Arizona Memorial.  The group also had the opportunity to witness some fine Hawaiian culture at the Paradise Cove Luau - not a lot of food was left over after the cadets made two and three passes through the buffet line.

Westview has established itself as the premier unit in Southern California during Field Meet competitions by winning two of three so far this year.  Forty cadets compete in Personnel Inspection, five drill events, an academic test and four athletic events.  Westview placed first at the UCLA NJROTC Drill Meet and the Valley of the Sun Field Meet in Phoenix, AZ.  The unit stayed onboard Luke AFB during the trip to Phoenix    The marksmanship team continued its winning ways by placing first at the Pasadena NJROTC Marksmanship Invitational where Westview cadets took home 10 of 12 medals.   Westview marksmanship members have gone on to the Navy JROTC Service Championship for six straight years.

The cadets just wrapped up a very successful Annual Military Inspection with the highest grade possible (Outstanding) and our traditional Adopt-a-Family and Toys for Tots campaign.  Community service events are an important part of NJROTC.

Upcoming events include Wreaths Across America at Fort Rosecrans and a field trip to the Reagan Library where cadets will get the opportunity to visit their Discovery Center to role play the Grenada Invasion.

WESTVIEW GOLD

Westview Gold Places First in Arcadia

Westview’s Choral Music Program presents “Sounds of the Season: Winter Concert 2010” on Thursday, December 2nd and Friday, December 3rd at 7pm.  Tickets are $6-$9.  This concert is sure to get you in the holiday spirit!

On a very rainy Saturday, just before Thanksgiving break, the Westvew Marching Band was invited to march in a competitive parade and then perform in a tournament field show at Citrus College.  The GOLD won gold by placing first in their division!  They played their hearts out and were rewarded  for all their hard work for their last tournament of the year.

3 Leg Torso Concert

An incredible group traveled from Portland to work with the band and orchestra students and then perform in a show that was simply amazing.   Not only did they inspire the students they even introduced them to the joys of the accordion as well!

Winter Show "Santa and the Symphony II"

Back by popular demand, Santa joined the show of band and orchestra students for two fabulous nights of fun musical entertainment.  Santa was even available for pictures before the show and during intermission.  There's always a canned/non-perishable food drive as well which brought in 14,000 items this year.

Disneyland

Last but not least, the Marching Band was invited to play at the Disneyland Parade on December 11th and the orchestra performed in Carnation Plaza.  Everyone got to enjoy the park the rest of the time and stayed until the park closed at midnight!
