Athletic/Extra-Curricular Eligibility

To be eligible for participation in extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, all students in performing groups, including but not limited to band, chorus, drama, athletics, and cheerleading, must meet the following academic requirements:

  1. During each grading period, students must attain a 2.0 grade point average in all enrolled courses on a 4.0 scale.

  2. Accounting of eligibility will be on the day of school-wide distribution of grades. At Westview the grades that will be counted for eligibility are every nine weeks.

  3. If students do not attain a 2.0 grade point average, they may be placed on academic probation. At the end of the probationary period, students who do not bring their grades up to a 2.0 grade point average, will be ineligible to participate for the following grading period. Summer grades may be included to improve Spring term grades. A student may only be placed on probation once during their freshman year and once during the subsequent three years.

  4. All CIF eligibility rules still apply.

  5. For the purpose of determining grade point average, all incompletes shall be computed as F's until the incomplete is changed to a letter grade. At that point, grade point average will be recalculated using the grade(s) earned.

  6. Students who are absent from school all day will not be allowed to practice after school and/or not allowed to participate in any games on that day.

  7. Students must attend at least four hours of class (2 classes) to be able to participate in practice or a contest on that day. Participation is contingent upon satisfactory discipline and attendance records.

Attendance Procedures

Parent(s)/legal guardian(s) are to contact the student’s homeroom teacher (HR) in advance of all day absences and early releases for doctor/dentist appointments. Call the main school number (858-780-2000) well before school starts and at the prompt, enter the HR teacher’s four digit extension.

The HR teacher will clear the absence, and when appropriate, prepare an off-campus pass for the student to leave campus. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain the pass from their HR teacher prior to leaving campus. Calls made for Tuesday and/or Thursday to clear all day absences or early releases for doctor/dentist appointments should also be directed to the HR teacher.

On occasion, a parent/legal guardian leaves a voice message to clear their student’s absence with the HR teacher and on the same day, receives a pre-recorded voice message from Westview’s automated “phone dialer” regarding an uncleared absence that the parent/guardian just called to clear. Please know that as long as the parent/guardian follows the above mentioned procedure, the absence in question will be cleared by the HR teacher.

If, for some reason, the absence is not excused in the computer’s attendance program, you may receive a call/email stating your student will receive detention if the absence isn’t excused by the following school day. If the student receives the detention due to school error in not clearing the absence, please contact the school receptionist for correction at (858) 780-2000 ext 3001.

Any student arriving late to school will proceed directly to their assigned class.

Dance Guidelines

School rules will be observed throughout the entire dance.

  • Students may be subject to a random Breathalyzer check

  • Student ID is required for dance entrance

  • Purses and coats may be subject to search

  • No food or drinks may be brought into dance

  • Students are encouraged to stay at the dance until the end

  • Once a student leaves the dance, he or she may not return

School dress code will be strictly enforced at the door.

  • Remember to fully cover the 3 B’s (breasts, buttocks, and bellies)

  • Extreme cutouts and side slits are not acceptable

Students are not permitted to display inappropriate or sexually explicit dancing.

  • Freaking is defined as sexually explicit dancing including grinding, groping, or inappropriate hand placement

  • Dancers must be vertical when dancing with a partner

Students will receive a wristband when checking into the dance.
If a student is found to be dancing in violation of the above guidelines, an administrator will cut off and keep the wristband as a warning. If student is found to be dancing inappropriately again and no wristband is on his or her wrist, the administrator will call the student’s parents and the student will immediately leave the dance.

If a student is asked to leave a dance, he or she will not be permitted to attend any of the remaining dances for the remainder of the school year.

Students must have the Dance Guidelines form on file in order to purchase a dance ticket. Dance tickets will be sold during Wolverine time and lunch in the finance office before each dance. If a guest pass is needed, a guest application will be required. Rules and regulations regarding guest passes are explained on the application.

Once the Dance Guidelines form is completed and on file, it is good for the entire school year.

E-mail Addresses of Westview Families

Communication is a key component of Westview’s vision statement and is essential in creating a connection between your home and Westview.

Westview uses email to disseminate information regarding school activities, as well as changes in the school days/times, assessment, scheduling, etc. Teachers also use email as one of their tools in communicating with you regarding your child. Because this is one of Westview’s primary means of communicating, it is important that the email address on file at Westview is one that the parent/guardian accesses.

Note: If spam blockers are utilized by your Internet Service Provider or email account provider, you need to put in Westview's email address (whs@powayusd.com) as a non-spam sender in order to receive emails from Westview.

It is important to update your email address as changes occur. Click here to send an email to inform Westview of your new address (please include your student’s name and the old email address used).

Student ID cards are a means of identifying a student as enrolled at Westview. Every school year at registration, each student receives a permanent ID card free of charge.

Students must carry their ID card with them on campus at all times and at school-related activities. Any adult may ask for the ID at any time. Students must present a current student ID card to use computers and check out materials from the library and for finance office transactions. The ID card is also necessary for admittance to athletic events, dances, and school-sponsored activities. Replacement ID cards can be purchased for $5 at the library.

Off-Campus Independent Study (OCIS)

Each school site will have the right to enroll students in independent study for a limited period of time if the students must be absent under conditions which do not meet the state requirements for excused absences. Students requesting independent study for five (5) or more days should notify the Hub Assistant five (5) days prior to departure. For extended absences, the Administrative Support Team should be notified five (5) to ten (10) days prior to departure. The Administrative Support Team will provide the student with a contract and assignment sheets for each of the student's teachers.

The contract must be signed and dated by all parties prior to the absence. When the student gives the teacher(s) the work assigned in the agreement, attendance may be claimed for the student for the days of absence provided that the work is completed by the date specified in the agreement and the work is equivalent to a full minimum day of attendance claimed. Note that the OCIS contract contains three dates; the beginning date of the contract, the ending date of the contract, and the date on which the work is due ("due date").

Tardy Students

Any student arriving late to school should proceed directly to their assigned class.

To respect all staff and fellow classmates, please arrive on time to each of your classes. Please remember that if you enter a classroom late, regardless of how quiet you think you are, it is always a distraction for someone, including the teacher, and is not in compliance with our six pillars of character. Students who are constantly tardy to class or are truant (ditch) will face consequences. The extent of the consequences will be determined by the number of tardies and/or truancies.
