H1N1 Vaccination Clinics

This is an important message from the Poway Unified School District for all parents and guardians regarding the free, voluntary H1N1 flu vaccination clinics to be held at our schools. These clinics will be held at selected schools beginning this Saturday, November 21. Future clinics will be confirmed as vaccine becomes available.

On this Tuesday and Wednesday, your student should bring home a pre-printed, individualized, vaccination consent form. On the back of this form will be the complete details of the vaccination clinics. As directed by the National Center for Disease Control and the San Diego County Health Department, these clinics will provide free vaccinations only for the limited priority group of Poway Unified School District students and their siblings ages 6 months to 18 years of age. Pregnant women will also be given the vaccine. Vaccinations will be provided as long as vaccines are available at the clinics.

If you would like your student or their brothers and sisters ages 6 months to 18 years of age vaccinated, you must accompany your student on the day of the clinic, and you must bring the pre-printed consent form with you to the clinic.

Information will be available on the District website under H1N1 District Vaccination Clinics, or you may call the District H1N1 Information line at 858-676-6970. Please do not call the school sites for information about clinics.

Important WHS flu information

Hi. This is Dawn Kastner, Principal of Westview. You have received a ConnectEd from Poway Unified School District regarding the reporting of possible cases of influenza. As you know, Westview does not have a central attendance hotline. We ask that you continue to call your student’s homeroom teacher to report most absences. However, when your student’s absence is due to flu-like symptoms, please call the following hotline: 858-780-2000, extension 3060. We are doing this to centralize the information required by the County Department of Public Health. The recording will direct you to leave specific information about the symptoms your student is experiencing. Again, the extension we are asking you to use to report flu-like symptoms is X3060. Thank you for helping us to work with the district and county health department to keep our students safe and healthy.

Fly Symptoms

Recognizing Flu Symptoms

Because all influenza or “flu” viruses can easily spread from person to person, Poway
Unified is asking for your help in reducing the spread of flu in our schools.

Here’s What Parents Can Do To Help:

Recognize the symptoms of the flu. Symptoms of the flu include fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher), cough, sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, and feeling very tired. Some people may also vomit or have diarrhea.

Do not send children to school if they are sick. Children who are determined to be sick while at school will be sent home. This includes before and after-school programs.

Make plans now for children who need to stay home. Plan for how children will be cared for at home in case they become ill.

Keep sick children at home for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone without using fever-reducing drugs. By keeping children home when they have a fever, we can reduce the number of new people who may become infected.

Foundation

Westview Foundation Thanks You!

Thank you to all of the families that have donated to the Westview Foundation this year! Through your generosity, the Foundation has raised nearly $60,000 which has been put to use immediately. These funds have extended library hours each school day for the remainder of the year; purchased 30 LCD projectors so that each classroom will now have a projector; provided replacement bulbs and screens for existing projectors; and increased the teacher’s classroom supply budget by nearly ten percent (10%). The Foundation is still working to raise funds to upgrade our library collection, provide additional secretarial and custodial staffing during peak times, and provide document cameras as well as computer and other technology upgrades.

Road work on Camino del Sur

Hello Westview Families,

As you have probably noticed, construction across the street from Westview has recently involved lane closures on Camino del Sur in the morning. A representative of Pardee Homes has told us that they expect to complete their work on the road by the end of this week. Please let your students know that if they’re driving to school, they’ll need to set their alarms for a little bit earlier than usual to ensure that they are on time to class.

On a separate note, today we had our most successful Emergency Evacuation Drill ever, with all students participating and following procedures as directed. We completed our search and rescue in record time. Congratulations to our Wolverines and our Westview Safety Team for an outstanding practice.

Thank you,
Dawn Kastner

Foundation Fundraising Event

Dear Westview Parents,

As you are aware, the Poway Unified School District was forced to cut $30 million dollars from its budget over the last two years. The cuts to Westview's budget alone have been close to one-half of a million dollars. At Back-to-School Night tomorrow evening you will be shown a video detailing Westview's many needs as a result of the severe budget cuts.

The Foundation is asking for a donation of at least $250 per student or $400 per family if you have more than one student at Westview. Please leave your checks in the envelope provided in your child's homeroom class tomorrow evening.

You may have been asked to make fair share contributions for your children to participate in sports and other school groups. Although your checks may have been made payable to the Westview Foundation, all of your fair share payment went directly to the organization in which your child is participating. None of those funds were used to support academic programs. One hundred percent of the donations received at Back-to-School Night will be used to fund the priorities identified in the video.

Thank you for your generosity!
Westview Foundation

Symptoms of the flu include fever of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, cough, sore throat, runny nose, headache, and feeling very tired.

Thank you for a great start to the school year and for your cooperation in keeping our students and staff healthy and our schools open and running normally throughout the year.

Pictures will be taken in room A141, and they may walk in before school, at lunch, or during an off-roll period.

Thank you,
Scott Wild, ASB Director

Safety Message

Dear Westview Families,

We have been asked by our neighbors to share the following important information:

From Pardee Homes:

Please be aware that there is an active construction site across from campus. In order to ensure the safety of students, please do not enter the construction area. Safety is our number one concern.

From the Torrey Highlands Shopping Center:

1. Parents CANNOT use the Torrey Highlands Shopping Center as a drop off in the morning, nor can they sit and wait in the car for their kids after school. This takes up parking spaces that should be for CUSTOMERS ONLY. They are free to do so if they use any of the businesses on those mornings or afternoons because they would be considered as customers.

2. If students park in our lots to attend school, their cars WILL be towed. Cost to retrieve the cars starts at $341. There will be NO exception to this rule. This year we have a private company that will enforce this policy. Please remember that the shopping center is PRIVATE property.

Thank you for reminding your students to be good neighbors.

Message from Westview Foundation

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Welcome back! As you know, Westview has experienced significant cuts in staffing this year due to the state budget crisis. What you may not know is that we have also lost much of the funding that paid for extended library hours, classroom technology and instructional supplies. The Westview Foundation is counting on your support more than ever before. The Foundation's goal is to provide the additional financial resources necessary to support the level of excellence at Westview that we have all come to appreciate and expect.

This week your student will be registering for the 2009-2010 school year. As you download your registration forms from www.westviewwolverines.com, please print out the Foundation Donation form. You can bring your tax-deductible donation to the Foundation table at registration. We understand that some of you have been hit hard by this recession and are unable to help, but if you can, we ask that you consider making a donation. Your partnership makes a difference!

Thank you,
The Westview Foundation

Back to School

Dear Wolverine Families,

Welcome to Westview for the 2009-2010 school year! I hope that you all have had a wonderful and relaxing summer, and that you are as excited as we are about the coming year. Id like to take this opportunity to share some information with you.

The First Day of School
The schedule for the first day of school is posted on our website. Freshmen and other students new to Westview will meet at 8:05am for Link Crew orientation activities. Returning Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors will arrive at 10:30am and report to their homerooms to get their schedules. Buses will run at their regular morning times, and then again exactly two hours later than the scheduled times for the stops.

Schedule Changes
THE ONLY SCHEDULE CHANGES THAT WILL BE MADE DURING THE FIRST TWO DAYS OF SCHOOL WILL BE TO CORRECT DUPLICATE CLASSES OR PERIODS FOR WHICH A CLASS WAS INADVERTENTLY OMITTED. Students who need other schedule changes must complete a course change form and leave it with their counselor. Please realize that the master schedule and staffing were built around the courses that students requested last spring. Most classes are very full and schedule changes are difficult to make. NO SCHEDULE CHANGES WILL BE MADE TO ACCOMMODATE TEACHER, TERM OR PERIOD PREFERENCES.

Communication
Good communication is very important to us at Westview. You will be able to get a great deal of information about schedules, policies, sports, and more by visiting our website at westviewwolverines.com. The website also provides a portal to Learning Point, which will provide helpful information throughout the year about your students assignments, grades and teacher contact information.

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO KEEP YOUR INFORMATION UPDATED. Westview uses email and the telephone as our primary means of contacting parents about attendance problems, emergency notifications, college preparation evenings, etc. If you do not have access to email, please notify the school and we will send you information by snail mail.

Staffing Changes
As you probably know, the state budget situation has necessitated deep staffing cuts for the schools. This is the third round of cuts since 2003, and it will be difficult to avoid the impact this year. Westview has lost more than 10 teaching positions, two custodians, four secretaries, a librarian, most of our Student Services department, our locker room assistants, and part of our music assistant support. We have also lost two counselors, so while we have tried to maintain as much consistency as possible, over one third of our students will have a new counselor this year. The good news is that we have outstanding counselors, so I can assure you that your students are still in good hands. If you need secretarial or custodial assistance, we request your patience if things take a bit longer. Please know that we are still committed to providing the same quality of service to our community.

Dress Code and Attendance
One of our goals is to prepare students for life after high school, and learning to choose appropriate attire at school helps prepare students to make good choices in the work world they will eventually enter. I'd like to remind you that the Westview dress code is available on our website. Please help your students to choose attire that is modest and does not distract others from learning. The most common dress code violations involve inappropriate T-shirts and clothing that fails to fully cover The 3 Bs (breasts, buttocks and bellies.)

Another way we can support good habits for life after college is to stress the importance of good attendance and punctuality. Please be sure that your students start developing good habits from the first day by being on time to all classes.

We are looking forward to another great year at Westview. Go Wolverines!

Regards,
Dawn Kastner, Principal

Westview Newscast

Westview Students!!!!

Are you interested in being a part of a team that produces the Wolverine News? Westview has been without a student driven newscast for two years, and we have heard from several students that they would like to see the newscast return this year.

We are looking at building a new class that would be offered during period 4 in the fall that would be responsible for producing a weekly newscast that would be shown in homeroom.

If you are interested in joining this class please email me at tcassen@powayusd.com and include the course or off roll that you would plan on dropping in order to fit this class into your schedule.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Mr. Cassen, Area Administrator
