PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

The state budget crisis is once again having a significant impact on education, and Poway joins with districts all around the state in wondering when and how it will be resolved.

Unfortunately, we know that the current economic situation has affected not just our school, but also our community. Wolverine families have always stepped up to help this school when times were tough, and I want to remind you that the Parent/School Partnership is a relationship that goes both ways.

Some parents have hit rough patches or may be between jobs. At home, this could translate into difficulty providing meals, housing, or meeting some basic school needs. Please be aware that you may be eligible for free or reduced rates for lunch, AP Exam fees, and/or college testing fees. Certain laws also exist regarding the ability of students to remain in their school of residence.

Please let us help make your road easier. We can provide referrals for counseling and other family assistance options that are available on a sliding scale basis. Additionally, our Student Support Services can assist with many day to day needs.

If you are unsure if you would qualify for services, please contact your child’s counselor. Your inquiry will be kept in strict confidence. Know that Westview is committed to supporting our Wolverine family.

PTSA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

I have a Facebook account. My daughter set it up for me before she headed off to college, insisting it would be the best way to keep in touch with her. She was right … our kids are very much of the “technology generation.” If it weren’t for text messaging and Facebook, I would probably know very little about what’s happening in her daily life away from home (sometimes I think knowing very little might be a good thing??!!).

Anyway, a few of my Facebook friends recently passed on a “25 Random Things” game where you list various random thoughts, facts, habits, or goals about yourself and post them on your Facebook page (yes, sort of like those chain emails that we all know and hate. I am always the one who “ruins it for everyone else” by breaking the chain). I didn’t follow through with this one either, but if I DID take the time to put together such a list, here are a few things I might include:

1) I worry about my youngest daughter and the latest trickle-down effect the economy will have on funds for public education … on HER education. I’m tired of the constant need to advocate for something that should be a given for our kids. Sometimes I just want to forget about it. But then I realize that if I don’t speak up for her and all our kids that are in the same boat, who will? I am thankful that PTA provides a vehicle for us to realize ONE united voice for EVERY child.

2) High school is hard. Our Westview students are under tremendous pressure socially and academically. We hold such high expectations for our children to excel on all fronts. An informal survey I conducted with some of our students revealed that the number one issue they would like support on is dealing with stress. Every now and then I think we need to give our kids a pat on the back just for showing up.

3) Sometimes people say to me “You are so good to volunteer. I wish I could do more.” My response to that is if you can do more, please do. Especially right now, we need more hands than ever to make things work. But if you can’t do more, don’t beat yourself up. These are challenging times. Give YOURSELF a pat on the back just for showing up. And then give your neighbor a pat on the back, too.

4) Our community rocks. I have had many of the same neighbors for going on 15 years. While we may see each other only some of the time, and chat even more infrequently, I know we’re looking out for each other. I had the same feeling walking around at Back-To-School Night the other night, bumping into various friends and acquaintances that I hadn’t seen in a while. People weave in and out of our lives, creating an amazing support network that’s there for us when we need it. Be proud that you are part of that web of support and remember too that it is always there for you to tap into, whether through a friend, neighbor, the school or even the PTSA.

And so there you have it … a few of my Random Thoughts. If you have any you’d like to add, you know you can find me on Facebook!

Have a wonderful month!

PTSA JANUARY ACTIVITIES

The PTSA was hard at work during the month of January on activities in support of our goals and objectives approved at the beginning of the school year.

Here’s a summary of some of the things accomplished:

Staff Grants – Grants in the amount of $3200 were awarded to Westview staff members for classroom and instructional supplies. A big thank you goes out to Paula Dycaico, Staff Grants Committee Chair, and committee members Michelle Schall, Allison Aquino-Arcio, and Alex Dycaico for their work in reviewing applications and selecting grant recipients.

Nominating Committee – At our Association meeting on February 9, members of the Nominating Committee were elected. This committee is responsible for putting together the slate of elected officers to be voted on at our April association meeting to serve for the 2009-2010 school year. Thank you to PTSA Parliamentarian Elizabeth Estes for coordinating these efforts and to Kris Shetter, Zhaleh Moshavegh, Cindy Woodward, Mari Stryjewski, and Paula Dycaico, along with alternates Janet Ranshous and Cathy Carpenter, for agreeing to serve on this committee.

And a big thank you to all of you who showed up to volunteer for various projects and events on campus during the month of January to help get the new year started off right!

MEDICATION FORMS

Please be aware that students who need medication at school must have a form on file that is filled out and signed by your student’s doctor, you the parent, and the student. The forms are posted on the Westview website under:

Campus Information
General Information
Health Office

The forms are either “Authorization to Administer Medication” (if you want me to give the medication at a designated time during the day, here in the health office); or “Authorization to Carry Medication” (if you would like your student to be able to carry their medication with them at school or on field trips and sports events).

This must be done for all over-the-counter medicine as well as prescribed medication
(i.e., any brand of ibuprofen or acetaminophen, cold or allergy medicine, Lactaid, antacids or Pepto Bismol etc., skin ointments or disinfectants, etc.). Medication is not kept in the health office unless provided by the student’s family.

Students must have a note signed by a PARENT ONLY to carry the following:

Cough Drops
Lip Balm
Throat Lozenges
Contact Lens Solution

Please feel free to call Leslie Stebbins, Health Attendant, at 858-780-2000, x3027 if you have any questions.

WESTVIEW HOSTS SOLO AND ENSEMBLE FESTIVAL

On Saturday, January 10, and Saturday, January 17, band and orchestra students gathered all day waiting to perform before professional adjudicators who critiqued their work and offered helpful suggestions to improve their performances.

Those students who performed exceptionally well were asked to return for a Saturday night "Command Performance" for all their fellow “Bandos”, “Orchies” and parents.

There were so many outstanding students, the show lasted over two hours with wonderful individual and group performances that were enjoyed by all in attendance. Truly an outstanding group of musicians!

Congratulations to all!

What's Coming Up

NAVY JROTC AMONG STATE'S ELITE UNITS

JROTC Myth #1: I don't want my son/daughter in JROTC because I don't want them going into the military out of high school and going off to Iraq or Afghanistan.

Fact: This drives me crazy! There's absolutely no military obligation after high school. None. Nada. Zippo. The course focuses on developing life skills, self discipline, self confidence and attention to detail.

Navy JROTC's compete in three major areas of competition during a school year - Academic "Brain Brawls," Field Meets and Marksmanship events. Westview is one of only five units that have qualified for the championship in each of these areas which places them among the elite units in California. There are 58 units in the Southern California area.

The Battalion Commanding Officer, Cadet Commander Sara Escobedo, was awarded Navy JROTC's highest award, the Meritorious Achievement Award, during Battalion Quarters in January. Cadet Escobedo's award was an "end of tour" award which encompassed her four years in the program. Earlier in the year she was awarded a Letter of Commendation from an active duty Admiral for her work as a staff cadet during last summer's JROTC Leadership Academy at Cal Lutheran University. Cadet Escobedo will be a Cadet Staff Instructor this semester and the unit is now led by Cadet Commander Derrick Caton.

Most importantly, senior cadets have been accepted to some outstanding universities which include West Point, Embry Riddle, Azusa Pacific, San Diego State, Arizona State, Arizona, Auburn, Cal State San Marcos, Fresno State, Northern Arizona, Sacramento State and Hawaii among others. They'll be more as offers flow in this spring. The Leadership aspects of JROTC are well received by admissions directors on college applications.

Upcoming events are the Field Meet "Super Bowl" and "Brain Brawl" championships in March along with the annual Military Ball. Downwind events are NAB Coronado overnight trip and May's second annual trip to Magic Mountain.

SENIORS

ATTENTION PARENTS OF SENIORS

Hopefully you and your student have now registered for a FAFSA PIN. If you have not done so, please visit http://www.pin.ed.gov to complete this vital step (a link is also available in Family Connection). After you are issued a separate PIN for both student and parent, you may then complete the FAFSA registration process. The FAFSA is an important document if you want to be eligible for many grants, loans, and scholarships for college. This applies not only to students who plan to attend a 4-year college, but also those planning to continue their education through the community college system or various technical schools.

Although the application is based upon your tax returns, which are often not completed until April 15, many colleges need the FAFSA to be filed by March 2 (some more selective schools even need FAFSA completed earlier). You can complete the FAFSA with estimated tax information, if the actual numbers are not available.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE

If your student plans to attend community college in the fall, Palomar will be conducting the STARS test to be administered in March this year. Palomar Colleges comes to Westview and administers the placement exams for English and math. Please send your student in to see Miss Bloomfield in the Wolverine Center to sign up.

CAL GRANTS

If students are interested in applying for a Cal Grant, they need do nothing more than complete their Diploma Order Form with their correct social security number. The GPA Verification Form is not required. If your student has not submitted their completed Diploma Order Form, please instruct them see the registrar as soon as possible.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Now that college applications have been submitted, many students are focusing on obtaining scholarships. Hundreds of scholarships are available for seniors, as well as other grade levels. Available scholarships are listed in Family Connection by clicking on the scholarship list.

JUNIORS

COLLEGE INFORMATION NIGHT

Counselors will be hosting a Junior College Information night. We will be discussing college entrance requirements and planning for the 12th grade year at Back-to-School Night, Tuesday, February 9, at 5:00pm in the Westview Theatre.
