Class placements will be based on information about your child that you communicate to us through the enrollment paperwork and that we gather during an informal pre-screening "Getting to Know Your Child" on August 11, 2008. You will be given a specific appointment time when you turn in your child's enrollment paperwork. PEPP – Poway’s Extended Primary Program

PEPP is a Two Year Kindergarten Program offered at other school sites in the Poway Unified School DIstrict. KINDERGARTEN

Kindergarten at Turtleback School is a program for 5 and 6 year old children who are ready to flourish in a formal school setting. Students will focus on letter knowledge and sounds, beginning reading through reading groups and Morning Read, Writer's Workshop, math skills, and exploring the world through science, social studies, and the arts.
 

A K-1 classroom is made up of about half kindergarten students and half first grade students.  Because of this combination of children, the classroom tends to move at a faster pace. Kindergarteners who are enrolled in this program should have pre-school experience and be familiar with all of the letters and sounds they make.  Small motor skills such as writing, drawing and cutting are helpful as well.  Being able to listen, follow directions and work independently are important in a K-1 room. 
 

WHAT WILL KINDERGARTEN BE LIKE?

• Your child will have learning activities involving reading, writing, math, etc.
• Your child will work with crayons, glue, scissors, puzzles, books, blocks, and more.
• Your child will be following directions and obeying rules.
• Your child will be expected to use words to express feelings and needs.
• Your child will be sharing and will have responsibilities in the classroom.
• Your child will develop independent work habits.
• Your child will learn to listen without interrupting.

• Establish a set bedtime (young children need about 10-12 hours of sleep each night).
• Establish a set time to wake up each day (allowing plenty of time for a good breakfast).
• Your child should be able to dress independently.
• Your child should be able to handle all bathroom needs independently.
• Your child should have the experience of having a baby sitter (other than a relative), attending a play group, etc. to take directions from a new adult.
• Your child should be comfortable with parents separating from them for a time, knowing they will return as promised.
• Your child should be able to recognize their first name in print.
• Your child should see the value you place on school by your involvement in the classroom and school organizations such as PTA.

Wednesday, April 30, 3:00 pm we will be having orientation in the multi-purpose room (MPR). You will have the opportunity to meet the principal, staff and PTA President,  learn about kindergarten curriculum, discover ways to get your child ready to be a Turtleback Terrapin.
