Attendance

Reporting Absences: When a student is going to be absent, parents are encouraged to leave a message on the 24 hour school attendance hotline, (858) 673-3967 before 10:00 a.m.  each day the student is absent.  PLEASE do not call the office to report routine absences - use the hotline!  (Our office phones and our desks can be very busy using the hotline lets me check for messages during the quiet moments.)  If your child will be absent from school due to anything other than illness, please contact the school office in advance to arrange for homework and/or a study contract.
Student Tardies: Any student who arrives after the 8:10 bell MUST check in at the office.

Health Office Information

Your student’s health influences his/her performance in school.  You can assist the school in maintaining healthy and safe conditions for your student by cooperating with the following:
EMERGENCY INFORMATION – Assure up-to-date emergency information/contacts are on file at school.  This includes parent home and work numbers!  Emergency contacts may be called when parents are unavailable.  Provide your school with:
  • Names and phones numbers of neighbors/friends, with available transportation, to call in case you cannot be reached.
  • Current health concerns for your student (i.e., asthma, insect sting allergy, epilepsy, etc.

FIRST AID – In case of an accident at school, the school staff will provide first aid care only.  Your student will then be referred to you.  However, if your student’s health is considered “at risk”, paramedics will be called.  Parents are responsible for any cost incurred.

ILLNESSES - Please keep your child home if they have a fever, vomiting or diarrhea. Per District Guidelines your child must be fever, vomit and diarrhea free for 24 hours prior to returning to school.
NON-SCHOOL INJURIES – The school is not permitted to provide care for injuries that have occurred away from school.  This includes the changing of bandages or similar services.  Specialized Health Care procedures that require written instructions with parent and physician approval are available through Health Services.

COMMUNICABLE DISEASES – Please keep your student at home and consult your physician if he/she has any symptoms of a communicable disease.  If your student is absent due to a communicable disease (i.e., strep throat, head lice, chickenpox, measles, etc.) or serious illness, obtain a note from your physician verifying the diagnosis, treatment plan, and date your student may return to school.

PUSD has a “No Nit” policy for head lice.  Following examination by the Health Attendant, students are readmitted to school only when hair is clear of all visible nits.

MEDICATION – Before any medication (prescribed or over-the-counter) can be given during school hours, an Authorization for Medication Administration (PUSD H-26) or similar must be on file.  This form or a doctor’s note must be signed by the physician and parent/guardian.  The school staff will then supervise self-administration of the medication during school hours. Students who are required to take medication during school hours may be assisted by school personnel if the school receives a medication authorization form filled out by your child’s physician and the parent detailing the instructions for administering the medication.  This form can be picked up at the school office. For safety reasons, only adults may bring medication to school. Please do not send it to school with your child.

Students are not allowed to carry medications during the school day.  Exceptions are contingent upon written physician and parent approval.

Please contact the Health Attendant if you have any questions.  Your school welcomes communication and school for the health of your student.

Visitor Information

PUSD Board Policy prohibits volunteers on campus (this includes any work in the classroom, library, workroom and office) until they have completed a Megan’s Law background check, signed the Code of Conduct and have turned into the office documentation of a current cleared TB Skin Test.  A TB Skin Test schedule is attached.  If you need a TB Skin Test, you MUST obtain a volunteer verification form from the office prior to receiving your TB Test.  There will be no charge for the TB Skin Test.  All visitors and cleared volunteers must report to the office, sign in, and wear a picture ID badge while on campus.  The PTA keeps track of volunteer hours and reports them to Palomar Council.

Remember you may NOT volunteer at Turtleback until you have been issued a badge.

Parking Lot Procedures

During morning drop-off, if you would like to drop your child off in the horseshoe area, please drive to the right of the orange cones and pull as far forward as you can. Friendly parent volunteers will open your car door and assist your child. In our attempt to keep the parking lot safe and to move families through quickly, please make your good-byes very brief and do not get out of your car. It is very dangerous when children exit cars driving through the  inner lane (to the left of the orange cones), as they must then walk between moving cars. The left lane is designated for through traffic only.

Please keep in mind these simple guidelines:
Drive slowly and be on the look out for little people.
Please follow the directions of the parent parking ambassadors and safety patrol officers. They are kind, generous volunteers who are looking out for the safety of your children. Follow all rules of the road.
Be on time. Allow you and your child sufficient time in the morning. Say your goodbyes at home.  Once you are in the drop-off zone, your child should be ready to exit your vehicle to the right. The inner lane of the horseshoe is for through-traffic only. It is very dangerous to let children out from that lane.
Follow the cone patterns and directions of parent traffic ambassadors and student safety patrol officers. The outer lane of the horseshoe (closest to the school) is for loading and unloading only. Pull as far forward and as close to the curb as you can. Please do NOT get out of your car.
Be patient and kind and allow for the unexpected.
