PARENT DISTRICT SURVEY

AROUND THE WORLD DAY-MAY 9TH
Around the World Day is Thursday, May 9th from 8:30am-11:45am.  You are invited to volunteer and enjoy the day.  .  .  Don’t miss out on this wonderful day!

SUNSET HILLS WINS BEST SCENE AWARD AT SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL
Sunset Hills brought home the Best Scene Award in the Elementary School division at the 8th annual San Diego Shakespeare Society's Student Shakespeare Festival .Sunset Hills was the only Poway Unified school to compete, and one of only two public schools competing in the elementary school division.  The Sunset Hills Players, an ensemble of 5th graders Elena Burge, Allison Burgess, Adrian de Leon, Michaela Fischer, Nathaniel Gent, Haley Josten, Eric Lynn, Andrew Oabel, Andrew Prescott, Minh-Son Tran,  Jade Treese and Chayse Trammer, performed a ten minute scene from Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Julius Caesar. The students rehearsed throughout the months of March and April, and their hard work paid off when The Sunset Hills Players were awarded the Best Scene trophy for the Elementary School division, followed by Haley Josten being awarded the Best Performer medal.

BEFORE SCHOOL HOMEWORK CLUB
The Before School Homework Club is going to continue through the end of the year but will only be on Friday mornings.  Those students are welcome to attend the Before School Compass Learning in the computer lab on Wednesday mornings.

SUNSET HILLS GIVING GARDEN
Help our garden grow; leave a lasting legacy in our container garden.  Sponsorships are available at many levels.  Find a level that works for you and help plant the seeds of learning in our Giving Garden.

We have applied for a grant to help fund the garden.  Please go to https://www.facebook.com/seedsofchange/app_589705354373524?app_data=e1255494-1a55-4e7f-a0c9-7eda9c1f6d8e, log onto your facebook account and “like” the page and vote.  Share with your Facebook friends to get more votes.  You can vote once a day until May 17th.  We will move into the final judging phase if we are in the top 50 schools with the most votes.

FAMILY PICNIC-AUCTION NIGHT AND ARTS GALA MAY 31st
This year’s Arts Gala will be in conjunction with the Family Picnic and Auction on Friday, May 31st.  We need volunteers to head up each classroom project which entails creating a work of art for the auction.  If you need ideas, there is a scrapbook in the office of previous projects.  Contact Terri Josten at terrijost@yahoo.com if you have questions.

FOUNDATION NEWS
The Sunset Hills Foundation is actively looking for board members for next year.  This is a great way to help out our school with a very small time commitment.  We only meet for an hour once a month in the evening.  Please contact garryburgess@live.com if you are interested.
We are also planning for the 16th Annual Family Picnic and Auction.  We are looking for donations and volunteers.  If you are interested in helping, please contact us at admin@seagullfundraising.com.

KINDERGARTEN ENROLMMENT FOR 2013-2014
Kindergarten Enrollment starts this Tuesday at 7:30 am in the multipurpose room. 
Kindergarten
= Students turning FIVE YEARS OLD before October 1, 2013
Transitional Kindergarten (TK) = Students whose FIFTH birthday is between October 2, 2013 through December 2, 2013.
(Students who have FIFTH birthdays between June 1, 2013 and October 1, 2013 who want TK will need to get their name on the TK Waiting list, which opened March 8th.  These Kindergarten students will be placed in TK – IF space is available and on a first-come/first served basis with September birthdays given priority.)

Kindergarten/TK Enrollment:
Tuesday, May 7th from 7:30 am - 11:30 am
Kindergarten/Parent Orientation:
Thursday, May 23rd from 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm
Grades 1-5 Enrollment:
Wednesday, May 8th from 7:30 am - 4:00 pm

CONTINUING STUDENT REGISTRATION 2013-2014 (Current SHES students)
May 16th and May 23rd are the dates to complete the Continuing Student Registration.  A table will be set up in the front of the school from 7:30 am – 8:30 am and 1:15 pm-2:30 pm.  Each student who will be attending Sunset Hills next school year must complete the registration forms.   You will need to download the Signature Verification Form from the district websitehttp://www.powayusd.com/ and turn that in.  We will have the Student Registration form available for you to review, make corrections and sign.  If you have a fourth grader next year you will also need to complete and turn in the Health Information form.  All students MUST complete the registration paperwork to continue next year. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

STAFF APPRECIATION DAY-MAY 23rd
We appreciate all of the staff at Sunset Hills! Mark your calendar. We will be celebrating Staff Appreciation Day on Thursday, May 23rd.  Although National Teacher Appreciation week takes place May 6th-10th, we will celebrate our Sunset Hills staff May 23rd. 

SAN DIEGO AIR SPACE MUSEUM SPACE DAY
The San Diego Air Space museum is hosting the 10th annual Space Day Celebration on Saturday, May 11th.  Enjoy a day of fun, hands-on activities at the museum driving a Mars Rover, building and flying paper rockets, designing a space patch and much more! Students get in free.

       

COLLEGE BOUND T- SHIRTS - WEAR THEM EACH MONDAY
Each Monday we see more students wearing grey College Bound T-shirts. It is not too late to order a shirt.  Order forms are on Peachjar and also located in the office.  The cost is $10.00 per shirt. We encourage you to join the College Bound spirit!
