About Sunset Hills

Sunset Hills Elementary School, established in 1974, has a reputation for providing an excellent learning environment for students.

Recognized by the State of California as a Distinguished School, Sunset Hills currently serves approximately 450 students in preschool through fifth grade.

Located in Rancho Penasquitos, the Sunset Hills campus adjoins the campuses of Black Mountain Middle School and Mt. Carmel High School. This proximity allows us to share facilities and to utilize high school and middle school students as mentors and tutors for our students.

We are proud of the rich diversity of cultural backgrounds in our community. The families in our school represent more than 20 languages. We celebrate this diversity during special events such as “Around the World Day,” when students participate in multicultural activities.

Volunteerism is a vital part of the Sunset Hills learning environment.   We appreciate  the support of our PTA that provides many community events each year. The Sunset Hills Foundation provides considerable financial support for school programs and enhancing our technological resources for students. Many parents serve as classroom volunteers, field trip chaperones, and academic mentors.

Our dedicated Sunset Hills staff and supportive community members work together to realize our mission, “Educating for Life."  Our collective responsibility is to “Educate for Life” so that our students acquire the knowledge and skills to succeed in school and beyond.
