G.A.T.E.
The Gifted and Talented Education (G.A.T.E.) program provides a differentiated curriculum and varied learning opportunities and environments based on the assessed needs of its identified pupils, that extends pupils' abilities, sensitivities, judgment, thinking skills, and self-concepts. Shoal Creek is committed to providing a high quality differentiated curriculum to their G.A.T.E. students within the regular classroom. Open-ended activities such as the following are utilized to help us meet that goal: Reading Workshop, Making Meaning, Writing Workshop, Everyday Math. At other times, students are grouped to best meet their academic areas of expertise. Examples of this might be found in Word Study Groupings, Literature Circles, Science/Social Studies Projects. The curriculum has been enriched through community activities and events each year.

Gifted children are those who are exceptional due to their markedly greater than average cognitive potential or ability, and whose exceptionality engenders special educational needs that are not likely to be adequately met through the regular core curriculum. They require a modified, differentiated curriculum in order to ensure their school growth and success. The purpose of GATE services in the PUSD is to identify and motivate highly able students to realize their full potential. The district seeks to formally identify and serve students whose cognitive aptitude is determined to be significantly beyond the level of their peers.
