[G.A.T.E. l 5th Grade Band l Student CouncilE.L.L. l PIP-PLUS]

The Gifted and Talented Education (G.A.T.E.) program provides a differentiated curriculum and varied learning opportunities and environments based on the assessed needs of its identified pupils, that extends pupils' abilities, sensitivities, judgment, thinking skills, and self-concepts.  Shoal Creek Staff is committed to providing a high quality differentiated curriculum to their G.A.T.E. students within the regular classroom.  Open-ended activities such as the following are utilized to help us meet that goal:  Reading Workshop, Making Meaning, Writing Workshop, Everyday Math.  At other times, students are grouped to best meet their academic areas of expertise.  Examples of this might be found in Word Study Groupings, Literature Circles, Science/Social Studies Projects.  The curriculum has been enriched through community activities and events each year.

The Shoal Creek Student Council currently meets every other Wednesday.  The council includes representatives from 3rd through 5th grades.  The student council is involved in numerous fund-raising activities and charity work.  In past years, the student council has helped to organize Jump Rope For Heart and Trick or Treat for UNICEF.  Each year the council raises money for the school.  In the past they have helped fund park benches located outside of the library and the mural at the front of the school.  The council plans spirit days once a month and helps lead Friday Flag.

Currently, Shoal Creek has 2 English Language Learner (E.L.L.) instructional aides.  Each works 15 hours a week servicing small groups of students on English language acquisition.  They do many different activities depending on the needs of the group.  The skills they work on are listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  At Shoal Creek we strive to provide E.L.L. students opportunities to meet the same high academic content standards expected of all students.  We promote positive self-esteem and cross-cultural understanding.  The E.L.L. program at Shoal Creek invites parents to share in the education of E.L.L. students.

What is PIP PLUS?

PIP PLUS is a weekly opportunity to help children in kindergarten through third grade, who may be having school adjustment issues.

How are students selected for this program?

The staff at each school recommends students whom they feel might benefit from the program.  Teachers provide input through a brief screening of all students in first through third grades in the first semester.  The kindergarten children are screened in the second semester.  A parent or school administrator may also refer students.  The final selection steps involve a phone call to parents, followed by a written permission form being sent home.  Parents must give written approval before a child can participate in the program.

What are the components of the PIP PLUS Program?

The Primary Interaction Program-Plus has two components:  one involving time in the activity room and another called Prime Time, using small educational groups.  After input from the teacher, parent and PIP+ Specialist, the student will be placed into one of these programs.  In both programs, the student will spend 30 minutes per week for 12 weeks, at a time period selected by their teacher.

Children accepted into the activity program will meet individually with a child aide in a specially equipped room to engage in various play activities.  Their "Special Friend" offers a supportive and non-judgmental relationship, which fosters positive self-esteem, confidence in their abilities, and an enhanced sense of belonging to the school.

PIP Prime Time uses two curricula:  Second Step and STAGES.  Second Step helps students gain skills to manage their anger, control their impulses, and increase their empathy toward others.  STAGES increases the coping skills of children who are going through a transition.  The skill groups, composed of three to four students, are led by a trained Student Services Assistant who meets weekly for supervision and instruction with a Regional/PIP Counselor.
