Assessment takes two
forms in the school setting: Assessment OF Learning happens after the fact. These are chapter quizzes, end of the unit tests, mid-terms, semester exams, standardized state tests every spring ... To draw an analogy, these types of assessments are like an autopsy ~ when the results are in, there is not a lot that can be done for that individual. Assessments FOR Learning are more diagnostic in nature. These may be simply the questions teachers ask daily to check for understanding, to pre-tests, to tests administered to determine growth throughout the year, and tests that tell the teacher what the next steps with the students should be. They change from year to year, and with the needs of the students. While the major emphasis is usually placed on the scores of the Assessment OF Learning, it is the day-to-day Assessments FOR Learning that "drive" the instructional steps and strategies in the classroom. Schools throughout PUSD are developing comprehensive assessment plans that create a balance between the two types of assessements for their sites. This was started during the 2003/04 school year and will become part of the site's School Improvement Plan in 2004/05. One of the
Assessments FOR Learning that is consistently used at Rolling Hills is
MAPS (Measure of Academic Progress) Assessments administered in the fall,
winter,
and spring of each year. To
help staff and parents better interpret the results and next steps, PUSD
has put together several very informative resources. |
