Put on a Happy Face!

At the end of a busy day, your feet may hurt and your head may pound, but when your little one comes running to you full of enthusiasm about something at school, put on a SMILE and match their excitement.  When you put them off with, “Later, Later”, their joys in the accomplishment disappears.

Make Mistakes Okay!

When children can learn from their mistakes, instead of feeling discouraged by them, they are on the ROAD TO SUCCESS!  Make mistakes okay by talking about your own errors:  “One mistake I made today was...”  Encourage your kids to describe mistakes that they made, and then talk to them about solutions:  “One way I can keep from making this mistake again is...”

How can you be more actively involved with your child’s school?

Attend PTA association meetings:  voice your hopes and concerns for your child and for the school.  Help organize meetings around your interests and those of other parents.

Offer to help in the office, cafeteria or to chaperone on field trips and other outside events.

Agree to serve on parent and community advisory groups to your school.  Consider everything from school policies and programs to the kinds of parent involvement activities that the school plans.

If you’re unable to volunteer in the school, look for ways to help at home.  Call other parents to tell them about school related activities, edit the school newsletter or make educational materials for teachers.  If you are bilingual, help translate school materials or interpret for non-English speaking parents in your school.
