PTA's Call to Action!
On Friday, March 13th, teachers across California were given pink slips. Many students and parents at our school and across the state showed their support for teachers and staff by wearing pink. Please do not stop there! Our “Call to Action” has just begun! It is more important than ever to voice our concerns to our representatives about the state’s budget cuts to education. We MUST NOT let them forget about our children. There should be “No Child Left Behind”. Our children are our future. Those we educate today will be tomorrow’s leaders.
How can you help? Contact your elected Representatives and demand Federal Stimulus money earmarked for education be allocated to school districts. Do not allow the state to siphon off dollars in order to backfill the deficit. Let your Representatives know you support AB 8 (Brownley), which would require the state’s Director of Finance and Legislative Analyst to form a working group to make policy and fiscal recommendations to the Legislature and the Governor by December 2010. Also, let your Representative know you support Senator’s Simitian’s bill, SCA 6, which would place an initiative on the ballot to lower the parcel tax threshold to 55%. This parcel tax for PUSD would provide local dollars with local control over the dollars.
We will have a table set up in the front of school with Letters to Assembly Member Fletcher and Senator Wyland available for your signature. Please stop by the table to sign the letters. The PTA will then forward them to our elected Representatives. Please share this information with family and friends and ask them to join us in our campaign. It is crucial that our letters and our message stay in the forefront of the minds, mailboxes, phones, and faxes of our elected Representations. Together we can make a difference!
