Only new pieces of artwork, film, video, music, and dance inspired by the theme are accepted.
Where Students May Create the Works: A student may develop their work in or outside of school.
Originality: Each entry must be the work of one student. An adult may not alter, change, or enhance the creative integrity of student’s work.
Entry Form: All participants are required to fill out and sign the Official Entry Form. For Visual Arts & Photography, place Entry Form in a sheet protector and tape it to the back of each entry. The Entry Form for literature should be stapled to the manila file folder. For Music, Film/Video, and Dance, secure the Entry Form to the outside of the envelope containing the CD or tape.
Title and Interpretation of Work: Students have the option of placing the title of their work on the entry form and answering a few questions about how they created the work as indicated by the arts area rules. Music, Film/Video, & Dance are required to answer the questions on the Entry Form.
Judging Criteria: All entries are judged on artistic talent, creativity, and interpretation of the theme.
Helpful Hints: Complete Entry Form in its entirety. Read all rules. Check the deadline date. Note that artworks will not be returned until April for any pieces that qualify to go to PTA at the council, district or state level.

LITERATURE
- Fiction or Non-fiction
- Prose, Poetry, Drama
- Entries must not exceed 2,000 words.
- Entries may be submitted on any kind of paper, but not to exceed 8-1/2” X 11”.

- Collections of poems or short stories are not accepted.
- Entries are expected to reflect grade-appropriate grammar, punctuation, ad spelling.
MUSIC
- Original Composition
- With or without lyrics.
- Not to exceed five (5) minutes
- Students must submit a CD or audiocassette recording of the composition.
- Student must submit notation as required by their grade division.
- Score size: no larger than 11” X 14”
- Band and Orchestra composition may be 11” X 16”.
- Answer required question on Entry Form.
PHOTOGRAPHY
- Color or Black and White
- Single print or Collage
- Many Photographic processes accepted
- All Prints must be mounted on cardboard mat or board but may not to exceed 11” X 14” including mat.
- No Frames, No 3-D Entries,
- No Slides or Transparencies.
DANCE CHOREOGRAPHY
- The choreography must be the work of one student and must demonstrate creativity and interpretation of the theme.
- Up to three (3) dancers; choreographer does not have to perform. If costumes are used, choreographer must create them.
- Whether an entry uses a variety of techniques or a simple approach, it will be judged primarily on how well the student uses his or her artistic vision to portray the theme. A well-developed concept is more important than technique.
- Entries may not exceed five (5) minutes.
- Answer required question on entry form.
FILM/VIDEO PRODUCTION
- Submit original work of fiction or nonfiction where you are the director, screenwriter, and cameraperson.
- Categories: Animation, Narrative, Documentary, Experimental, and Media presentation using computers.
- Entries must not exceed
- five (5) minutes.
- Answer required question on Entry Form
VISUAL ARTS
- Painting, Drawing, Collage, Printmaking, Computer Art, or Fiber Work. No Ceramics.
- Artwork may not exceed 24” X 30”.
- Not to exceed a 3/8” thickness including mat.
- Entries may be submitted on paper, canvas board, cardboard, hot or cold pressboard, and canvas. Entries must be mounted on sturdy cardboard mats, but not in wooden, metal, plastic, or glass frames.
