Writing 1.1 Establish a controlling impression or coherent thesis that conveys a clear and distinctive perspective on the subject and maintain a consistent tone and focus throughout the piece of writing.
Writing 1.2 Use precise language, action verbs, sensory details, appropriate modifiers, and the active rather than the passive voice.
Writing 2.3a. Marshal evidence in support of a thesis and related claims, including information on all relevant perspectives.
Writing 2.3c. Make distinctions between the relative value and significance of specific data, facts, and ideas.
Writing 2.3e. Anticipate and address readers’ potential misunderstandings, biases, and expectations.
Students through practice will be able to write and coherent and logical on demand essay. THis essay is particulary important for the new SAT format.
Understandingsstudents will understand that when writing in a timed format. The same attention to detail and logical thinking must go into the writing. |

1. In class discussion we will come up with some of the inherent problems of writing agains the clock. These problems will be written on the board and then discussed. We will discuss strategies for overcoming these obstacles.
2.We will read a series of essays from the College Board for the new SAT essay. We will read the accompanying rubric and will apply the rubric to these essays and discuss why it is that the college board evaluation is as it is and if we matched what the college board had said.
