Reading 1.1 Trace the etymology of significant terms used in political science and history.
Reading 1.2 Apply knowledge of Greek, Latin, and Anglo-Saxon roots and affixes to draw inferences concerning the meaning of scientific and mathematical terminology.
Reading 3.1 Analyze characteristics of subgenres (e.g., satire, parody, allegory, pastoral) that are used in poetry, prose, plays, novels, short stories, essays, and other basic genres.
Reading 3.2 Analyze the way in which the theme or meaning of a selection represents a view or comment on life, using textual evidence to support the claim.

Established Goals

Students will learn about Early Greek lIfe and Mythology through the reading of The Odessey. In addtion, they will be able to critically read and answer a series of questions based on the book.

Understandings

students will understand that motivations for a characters actions has not changed much since the time of homer

Essential Questions

What is the motivation behind the Odyssey. Is he a hero or not? What is a hero?

Students will know how to read a text and use the text as evidence support a particular point of view, i.e. DBQ -- Is Homer a hero or not?

Students will be able to read a text form an opinion and support their opinion with evidence from the text and outside sources

Stage 2 - Assessment Evidence

Performance Tasks

1. Read The Odyssey
2. Answer Q2P
3. Participate in Class discussions about The Odyssey
4. Read Text about the Greeks and Greek Civ.
5. Write essay --Is Odysseius a hero or note?


Other Evidence

Students will write a persuasive essay. Is Odysseus a hero or not. They can take whatever position they desire as long as they support the position with evidence from the text. Outside sources concerning Heroes can be brought in as well but are not totally necessary.
