Objectives

The lesson plan will focus on the notion that aside from private collections, the public's understanding and appreciation of art comes primarily from publications, museums, and galleries. Emphasis will be on the imprtance of showing art and the encouragement of students to display their art publicly.

Anticipatory Set

Ask students to discuss the art dispayed in their home.

Ask students to discuss their experieces with world class museums and to discuss their favorite pieces of art.

Ask students to discuss various works of art within the classroom environment.

Lesson and Activities

1) Class field trip to content and media related local museums.

2) Class field trip to the Poway Performing Art Center Gallery.

3) Emphasize the importance of students participation in publicly displaying their art work.

4) Explain the opportunities available to the studnts for display of their art work. eg: Eye on Art Festival, San Diego County Fair and On Campus Display Opportunities.

5) Introduce students to On-Line web galleries and have the students create their own On-Line web gallery.

1) Field trip forms and various district required documents.

2) Forms for student reflection of museum visit.

3) Visual Aids:
a) Posters
b) Brocures
c) Web sites for the museums

4) Entry forms and docuemtation for student art exhibit opportunities.

2.6 Create a two- or three-dimensional work of art that addresses a social issue.
4.5 Employ the conventions of art criticism in writing and speaking about works of art.
5.4 Demonstrate an understanding of the various skills of an artist, art critic, art historian, art collector, art gallery owner, and philosopher of art (aesthetician).
