Child Development begins with a comprehensive study of reproduction, pregnancy, prenatal care and childbirth. The course continues with the development of the child up to age six. Emphasis is given to understanding the child’s needs physically, emotionally, socially, and intellectually. Special topics of study include preparation for birth, skills for effective parenting, positive guidance and discipline, child abuse and neglect, health and safety, and special challenges for children. Everyone has an opportunity to experience being a “parent” of a newborn baby for a weekend through “Real Care Baby”, an infant simulator.

This instructional and experiential course provides training and upgrading of skills for entry-level positions in child care programs. Instruction covers child development, child health, safety and nutrition, positive guidance techniques, and developmentally appropriate curriculum development. Students will plan, prepare, and teach thematic units and activities related to language development, math, science, music, art, and motor development. Direct experience with young children through the on-campus preschool or other child care programs within the community is a major part of this course. This course also explores and provides experiences involving other careers relating to children. A Career Path Program is available for students who are seriously considering a career with children. Successful completion of the Child Development Career Path Program qualifies students for a position as Assistant Teacher in a child care center.

This course involves the advanced semester levels of Child Development and Psychology 2.
This course explores and provides experiences involving a variety of careers relating to children. A Career Path Program is available for students who are seriously considering a career with children. Successful completion of the Child Development Career Path Program qualifies students for a position as Assistant Teacher in a child care center.

Clothing 1 – 6 prepares students to construct ready-to-wear garments and accessories from commercial patterns. Students engage in hands-on learning experiences including selecting sewing tools and fabric, laying out the pattern on fabric, cutting, sewing on standard sewing machines and using various hand stitches and pressing techniques. Measuring, fitting, seam finishing, fabric and clothing care, and decision making are included along with basic instruction in the area of textiles. Upper levels of clothing build on the skills acquired in the previous levels to include projects that involve more detail, new techniques, and more challenging fabrics.

Foods 1 focuses on nutrition and basic food preparation techniques. Learn to cook and meet individual food needs while exploring nutritional values. Also included will be planning, selecting, preparing and serving nutritious and pleasing meals following the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Careers in foods/nutrition are introduced.

Using the on-campus Titan Terrace Restaurant, students learn entry-level job skills in the restaurant business. Instruction includes information on planning, preparing, and serving meals in the restaurant. Jobs include cook, short order cook, cashier, host/hostess and waiter/waitress. Great food is served! Certificates are available.
