OVMS Physical Education Grading Policies

There are three grades that every student receives in Physical Education. Regardless of the class the student is in, the following guidelines apply.

Academics

This part of the student’s grade is largely based on a possible 10pts. to be earned every class period. The daily

points are divided up into 3 points for the daily run and 7 points for effort and participation.

Students also accumulate points each trimester through graded runs. These occur every two weeks and are either “The Mile” run, or the “Continuous Run”. These runs are all worth 10 points a piece. In addition, there are two fitness tests (push-ups and curl-ups) each trimester worth 10 points a piece. *These fitness tests are scored according to state standards and points are earned based on the student’s performance.

There may also be a standards based skill test depending on the unit of study.

Students may lose points for lack of participation, poor effort, failing the daily run, poor behavior, or chewing gum. The amount of point deductions for each of these infractions are up to the coach’s discretion depending on the frequency and severity of the student’s behavior.

Points lost for behavior can not be made up.

Work Habits

This portion of the student’s grade is largely based on their academic grade. However, other considerations, such as a student not improving on their push-up score over the trimester and or effort level during class time, can affect the final grade. The scale below shows a guideline used to break down the number of marks a student has accrued during the trimester into a possible Work Habit grade.

98% and up= O

97% - 86%= G

85% - 75%= S

74% and down = N/U

Citizenship

This piece of the student’s grade is driven by a number of things. Does the student come to class, on time, prepared each day? Is the student following school wide expectations? The scale below shows a guideline used to break down the number of marks a student has accrued during the trimester into a possible Citizenship grade.

0 marks= O

1 – 2 marks = G

3 – 5 marks = S

6 – ? down = N/U.

Physical Education Excuses

Students may be excused from physical education for up to three days with a signed/dated note from a parent/guardian. If the note does not read two or three days, we will assume that it is a one day excuse. To be excused from physical education for a longer period of time, students must bring a note from a doctor. If their physical condition allows it, they will be required to dress out for physical education and report to roll call.

We are a participation and effort based program. If a student is not present or they have a medical excuse then they are not earning their points for the day and should turn in a make-up form as soon as possible.

You may obtain a copy of the make-up form at the link below or the Learning Point sites of each the coaches in the department. Please know that in addition to these forms, we also offer time in class to make-up graded runs that were missed, as well as give the opportunity to make individual appointments with each coach should the situation make it necessary..

Fitness Gram

The state required fitness test called Fitness Gram measures five components of physical fitness which have been identified as being important because of their relationship to overall health and fitness. The five components are:

Aerobic Capacity Body Composition Muscular Strength

Muscular Endurance Muscular Flexibility

All students will be instructed in the appropriate technique for each of the required test items. Also with the new SB78 students will now be required by law to pass all five areas before graduating from high school.
