NEW STUDENT PICK-UP LOCATION
Good news for parents who pick-up their students from school. Safer streets for our students and less traffic congestion for you!
As many of you may have experienced, the streets leading to Mesa Verde get very congested around 3:15 PM every school day. Beginning Monday, October 26th our afternoon busses will be lining up along Entreken Avenue instead of inside the 6th grade parking lot. This will open up the 6th grade parking lot (the parking lot closest the end of Entreken Way) for parents to pick up their students. While this change is primarily one of safety for our students, it will also relieve the traffic congestion many of you sit in each day.
We are asking our parents to please remind your student to meet you in the 6th grade lot if you are picking them up from school. Thank you for your cooperation during this transitional period.
MVMS SCHOOL GATES
Our gates around the campus are closed in the mornings until 7:45 AM at the request of ASES program. The gates at the front of the school will continue to be opened every morning at 6:30 AM.
In the past, all gates were opened at 6:30 every morning. The State has changed the “sign-in” procedures for the before and afternoon school programs. Students are required to sign-in at our student center before utilizing the programs. As we are in jeopardy of losing funding for the program due to low student attendance, we are attempting to adhere to all guidelines. Keeping the gates closed until 7:45 is allowing the ASES program to have students attendance verified for the day. Signs are posted on the gates reminding all of the change. We apologize for any inconvenience.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED – Breakfast of Champions
Volunteers are needed to assist with our school's Breakfast of Champions program. Each month, students are selected to attend this breakfast based on standards set by the school. Two to three volunteers are needed to set up the breakfast once a month at 7:15am. For more information or to volunteer, contact Kris Shetter at sdshets@sbcglobal.net.
HANDY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
The staff of the Student Center needs volunteers to help assemble and repair well used game equipment. Items include foosball tables, arcade-style basketball hoops, pool tables and air hockey tables. This work can be done on the weekend and/or in the evening. If you would like to help, please contact Janet Lim at janetslim18@yahoo.com. Thanks so much!!!

• We would also like to dress up our campus by posting college posters and pennants around campus. We might even include a college door decorating contest.

FLU VIRUS
Because all influenza or “flu” viruses can easily spread from person to person, Poway Unified is asking for your help in reducing the spread of flu in our schools.
Here’s What Parents Can Do To Help
• Recognize the symptoms of the flu. Symptoms of the flu include fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher), cough, sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, and feeling very tired. Some people may also vomit or have diarrhea.
• Do not send children to school if they are sick. Children who are determined to be sick while at school will be sent home. This includes before and after-school programs.
• Make plans now for children who need to stay home. Plan for how children will be cared for at home in case they become ill.
• Keep sick children at home for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone without using fever-reducing drugs. By keeping children home when they have a fever, we can reduce the number of new people who may become infected.
• For more information, visit the PUSD website at http://www.powayusd.com/schools/Safety/.

Students are allowed to wear Halloween costumes to school on Friday, October 30, 2009. We’d like to partner with our parents and ask for your help to ensure the appropriateness of costumes and please NOT send your child to school with candy. Please review the following guidelines with your child:
*Only tasteful costumes allowed.
*All school dress code rules apply.
*No masks, no shoes with cleats.
*No large, too small, or cumbersome costumes that interfere with learning.
*Costume themes must be non-violent.
*No weaponry props are allowed.
As an alternative to costumes, another way to celebrate Halloween is to wear orange and black to school.
Students who are out of compliance of the above guidelines will change into P.E. clothing for the day.

LIBRARY NEWS
We are excited about what's happening in the library this year: book circulations and individual visits are way up! The total circulations of (library check outs) for August through October are over 2,700. That number is significantly higher than any year in our records that go back to 2001! What are our students are reading? The overwhelming favorite is fiction; however, sciences and literature are well represented too.
Not only is circulation up, so is attendance; and it looks like October is going to be a record-beater as well. Thanks for all your support and keep 'em comin'!

ASES PROGRAMS
Our Before and After-School Programs are funded by a California State grant. These programs are free to our students and provide a variety of enrichment and academic activities. In these times of severe economic trials, our programs are at risk of budget cuts.
Our Early Eagles Program opens its doors at 6:30am daily and run until campus opens daily. In addition to fun in the gym and student center, we offer a nutritional breakfast and tutorials. Mrs. Mori opens her classroom for her “Mornings with Mori” program. Students can complete their homework or get help with a project. We are asking parents who wish to participate to drop their students off at MVMS by 7:30 am (8:00am on Wednesday). Following State Education Code, students must participate at least three times weekly in order to count toward our attendance. There is no supervision available on campus between 7:40 and 8:00am, so if students are not enrolled in the Early Eagles program, they must not be on campus until 8:00am.
Our after-school programs have been cut for this year. What is the impact for MVMS? We can continue to fund our excellent YMCA program for a limited number of students, and we will continue our Drama program, but all other programs will be cut. We deeply regret these changes, and know that many valuable after-school activities will no longer be available to our students. We appreciate your support in maintaining our current levels of funding to continue to offer as much as possible to our students.

BEFORE/AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS
Here is an update on our Before and After-School ASES Programs. We start our day with the Early Eagles Program. This free program offers supervised fun in the student center, gym, as well as academic support and breakfast before school daily. What's the catch? This program is funded by a grant that requires that students are here with us by 7:30 at least three times during the week. Parents, please drop off students in the front parking lot, as other gates will remain locked until 7:45. Thank you, and if you have any questions, please contact Kathy Moore or Kim Hastings here at MVMS.
Our After-school program is also free to students. It includes our YMCA program, as well as our world-renown Drama club. Unfortunately other clubs had to be cut this year, due to budget cuts. We appreciate your support in keeping these programs going. Without your child's attendance of at least three days during the week, our before school program will also be cut. Parents, please be aware that if your child is not in our before school program, he or she should not be on our campus until 8am as there is no supervision available. Thank you again for your support.

Back To School Night ~ Wednesday, September 9th, 2009
(This letter is also available on our website http://www.powayusd.com/pusdmvms)
Dear Parents/Guardians:
We are excited to invite you to our Back to School Night this coming Wednesday, September 9, 2009! The schedule is arranged not only to give you a brief overview of your student’s classes, but also to provide an introduction to different ways you can be involved in your student’s education. We do need to point out that previous communication sent home stated that the start time for Back to School Night would be 6:30. Please note the actual start time is 6:00 pm. The schedule for the evening is as follows:
6:00 pm Our PTSA will be hosting its first meeting of the year in the student Lunch Area. As
this is the first PTSA meeting of the year, it will be brief one. This is an important
opportunity however to hear how our PTSA will be supporting our students.
6:25 pm Please report to your student’s first period class room. With the exception of 1st
period, classes will run eight minutes each with four-minute passing times between
periods. Class time is designed to meet your student’s teacher, hear an overview of
the curriculum, and find out how to best communicate with your teachers throughout
the year.
“Lunch” During your student’s lunch period, you will have the opportunity to visit information
tables and other spaces on campus your student may frequent. Please take the time
to visit these areas.
Important places to visit:
• The PTSA and Foundation Tables – get info on upcoming meetings and events and how to
join this essential parent organization.
• The Science Olympiad Table
• The Library – see a demonstration on how to access your child’s grades.
• The Student Center – get information about lunchtime activities, clubs, and our before/after
school programs. The Student Center is located in Room 326.
8:00 pm Last period ends. Before leaving our campus, please take time to visit any of the information areas you missed during “lunch” or get any of your remaining questions answered.
While we look forward to seeing your children each school day, due to limited seating in the classrooms, Back To School Night is for parents/guardians only. Please make sure your student has completed the class schedule printed on the back of this letter. You will need this form for the evening.
Additional parking will be available at Deer Canyon Elementary School. Please keep in mind that the purpose of Back-to-School Night is to provide you with a general overview of your child’s school day; it is not intended to be a time where specific information or questions about your child’s progress is shared. We will provide a separate opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher during Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences. These conferences will be held on the afternoons of October 27th, 29th, November 3rd and 5th. Additional conferences will be held the mornings of October 28th and November 4th. If you have any questions or concerns about your child that need more immediate attention, you are of course welcome to set up an appointment with the teacher as needed. We value you and appreciate your participation and involvement in your child’s education. We hope you have a pleasant and informative evening.
We look forward to seeing you.
Sincerely,
The Mesa Verde Staff

It's that time of year again . . . kids are digging in their couch cushions, the dark dusty corners of their backpacks and in the console tray of the family mini-van! Do you remember why? Our Pasta for Pennies Fundraiser begins this Monday March 2nd, lasting for 3 full weeks until March 20th.
Last year our school raised $6, 293 for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society! We were among the top ten supporters among Middle Schools in the San Diego/Hawaii Chapter. Our school goal this year is $5000.

ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES
Absences: When your child is absent from school, please be sure to call our attendance hotline at 538-5692 by 10:00 a.m. on the day of each absence. This call must be made by a parent or legal guardian. Please be aware that, per district policy, 12 absences within a school year are considered “excessive”. If it is suggested by a physician that your child stay home from school due to illness, please be sure to obtain a medical note and turn it into the attendance office upon the students return to school.
Late Arrival: Late arrivals are considered tardies. Five tardies per school year is considered excessive. Upon students’ arrival, students must report to the attendance office accompanied by a parent/guardian or a note written by their parent/guardian. All tardies accompanied by a doctor note will be excused.
Early Release: If it is deemed necessary that you pick your child up from school before dismissal time, please be sure to send the student with a note to the attendance office before school, so that we have time to process your request.

IDT & STUDENT TRANSFERS
Poway Unified School District Board Policy (PUSD) allows for transfers within and from outside the PUSD boundaries. There are two different types of transfers:
A Request for Intradistrict Transfer (Form PP-126) is used to transfer from your school of residence to another school within the PUSD boundaries. The Request for Intradistrict Transfer form is available in the “Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Transfers and Enrollment” under the “Hot Topics” section of our District website: www.powayusd.com. Once complete, the form may be mailed to PUSD Student Attendance and Discipline Office, 13626 Twin Peaks Rd., Poway, CA 92064, or may be hand delivered to our office located at: 13230 Evening Creek Dr., Ste. 207, San Diego, CA, 92128.
The Application For Interdistrict Attendance Permit, San Diego County Office of Education Form 341, which is available at in our Student Attendance and Discipline Office, is used to transfer from a district outside of PUSD into one of our school sites. The process for transferring from another district into PUSD should begin at the district office of the student’s residence. The district of residence needs to release the student before PUSD can accept the student into one of our school sites. You may find more information regarding this type of transfer in the “FAQ about Transfers and Enrollment” under the “Hot Topics” section of our District website: www.powayusd.com.
If you are considering a transfer, we ask that you submit your request by
March 14th, 2008.
