QUOTE OF THE WEEK
My recipe for life is not being afraid of myself, afraid of what I think or of my opinions.  ~ Eartha Kitt

HAPPY NEW YEAR
All of us at MRES send a big Happy New Year to each of you. We are looking forward to continuing to partner with you in 2009 to ensure that we meet the needs of each and every child.

MAPs TESTING
Beginning this Wednesday our students will be in the computer labs (yes, there are two now) completing their Winter MAPs testing. All 2nd – 5th graders will be testing along with several of our K and 1st grade classes that are piloting MAPs testing this year. The amount of time required to complete MAPs testing will be significantly reduced because we now have two labs (yeah!).

THE COUNT DOWN TO GREEN OK PACKETS IS ON
Beginning the first week in February, our OK packets will be sent electronically. We will send you a ConnectEd email each Wednesday with a link to our website (www.powayusd.com/pusdmres) where the packet will be available in a PDF format. This is part of our effort to save resources and be more environmentally friendly. We will still provide a paper copy of the OK packet for those individuals who do not have internet access. Forms to request a paper copy will be sent home in the OK packets. All of the information that you get on paper will be available on the website. Some items on occasion will of course still come home via your child as necessary. We hope that you will embrace our efforts and support our desire to go green. In this time of decreasing resources we are trying very hard to conserve where possible.

LIBRARY BOOKS
Our librarian, Mrs. Sellers, has the wonderful (and unwieldy job) of putting over 500 new books into our computer system and shelving them. If you are available to help get the books on our shelves and put them in our computer system please let us know. Our library will be closed this week to make sure all the books get put on the shelves and are available for our students to check out.

COMPASS LEARNING
The next round of our before and after school Compass Learning (CL) enrichment/intervention program will begin next Monday, January 12th. This session will run for five weeks from January 12th - February 13th. Confirmation and reminder letters will be sent home this week. All fourth grade students will be accessing CL from home via the internet between the hours of 4:00 -7:00 this round and will receive separate instructions. Please make sure that you drop off and pick up your child on time for each session. Students should be met at the door to the computer lab after school. Please do not ask your child to meet you in the parking lot. We want to ensure that all children get home safely. Students who miss two sessions will be dropped from the program and others on the waiting list will be allowed to participate. Remember, all students are welcome to access CL anytime after 7:00 PM during the week, after school on Friday and any time on the weekend. A link to the CL website and directions for using it can be found on our website under the student link.

COOL LINKS ON OUR WEBSITE
Check out the link for PARENTS on our website. Under this link, which is located on the left side of the website, you can find links to our PTA and Foundation websites along with links to prepay your child’s lunch, a parent emergency guide, instructions for becoming a volunteer at school and how to update your address and student information electronically.

TALENT SHOW DATE IS SET
We have finally set the date for the Talent show. It will take place on Wednesday, March 11th at Westview High School. We will be using Westview’s auditorium so that we can ensure we have a large enough venue for all of our performers and parents. The response by our students has been amazing and has far exceeded any of our expectations. More info will be forthcoming soon.

NO SCHOOL ON JANUARY 19th and 20th
Just a reminder that there will be no school on Monday, January 19th in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and on Tuesday, January 20th as our staff will be involved in a professional growth day.

LOST AND FOUND
Please make sure to stop by the lost and found and collect any missing items. It is located outside the cafeteria. There are many items that were not picked up over the break.

FOUNDATION
Recycling
Don’t forget to bring your recycling to the flagpole this Thursday. If your house is anything like mine, this day is much needed to clear out the garage of all the cans and plastic bottles.
