QUOTE OF THE WEEK
No pessimist ever discovered the secret of the stars, or sailed to an uncharted land, or opened a new doorway for the human spirit.
~Helen Keller

TEACHER OF THE YEAR
I am thrilled to announce that our 2009-10 MRES Teacher of the Year is 5th grade teacher Bernardo Campos. This is a HUGE honor and is an especially distinct tribute because the Teacher of the Year determination is based on a vote by the teachers at our site. Bernardo is a rare individual who is extremely talented and committed to mastering his craft and meeting all of his students’ needs. He is always willing to go above and beyond the call of duty and truly has the respect of peers, parents and students. Bernardo will be representing us at the district level. Go Bernardo!! We are so proud of you!

PEPP MEETING FOR 2009-2010 SCHOOL YEAR
A PEPP Information Parent Night is being offered for parents on Thursday, March 19th at 6:30 p.m. in the Painted Rock MPR. PEPP is a developmental program designed primarily for our younger kindergarten students who turn five between June 1st and December 2nd, and students with individual needs who would benefit from two years in a kindergarten class. MRES will be having PEPP next year.

REPORT CARDS/PROGRESS REPORTS
This Friday Trimester Two Progress Reports will be sent home. We know that a child's report card can bring feelings of joy, excitement, and pride. It can also cause concern, frustration, and uncertainty. In either case, this marks a new opportunity to set goals and reflect on past work habits, achievements, and hardships. It is also a time to communicate with your child and determine a path for future academic success and social-emotional growth. Regardless of your child’s marks your child, you should always first focus on the positive results.

4th GRADE STAR WRITING TEST IS THIS TUESDAY
This Tuesday our 4th grade students will be taking the CST writing test. Parents can help by ensuring their children come to school well rested and with healthy breakfasts in their stomachs.

PARENT RESOURCE – TALKING TO STRANGERS
The issue of how best to talk to children about strangers and safety is often a topic I am asked about. I wanted to share a resource with you that I found to be very helpful in talking to my own son about strangers and how to respond to people “you don’t know and kinda know.” This video, The Safe Side: Stranger Safety, is intended to be viewed by kids with their parents and does an excellent job of talking about the issue of strangers in a non-threatening and not scary manner. The video is intended for ages 4 and up. I have a copy in the office that I am more than happy to share. In short, I simply wanted to share a resource I found useful with my own family on a topic that is always difficult to broach.

1st ANNUAL MRES MATH MARATHON IS COMING
The 1st ever Math Marathon is coming to MRES at the end of this month! What is it? Students in PreK-5th grade will be tested on mastering grade appropriate math problems based on grade level standards Why? We thought that an educational fundraiser turned into a FUNdraiser would provide a unique opportunity for our students to learn, and to help raise funds for school and classroom needs. PTA will match up to $7000 in funds raised. More info coming shortly.
