QUOTE OF THE WEEK
Friendship with oneself is all-important, because without it one cannot be friends with anyone else in the world.
~Eleanor Roosevelt

DAD’S CLUB
Our Dad’s Club is hosting the first ever “Breakfast, Books, and Basketball” on Saturday, March 14th. Come to relax, connect with our school community, eat a yummy pancake breakfast, shop for books from our Scholastic Book Fair, and stay for a friendly pick-up game of basketball. Breakfast consists of 3 pancakes and a drink (OJ or coffee), and costs whatever donation you are willing to give. The goal is to raise money for calculators and other math supplies. We will be open from 7:30am – 10:30am. The book fair will take place in the library, and the pancake breakfast will be in the cafeteria. Hope to see all of you (that includes Moms, Aunts, Uncles and Grandparents) there! If you are willing to help out that day, or have an electric griddle you are willing to let us use, please contact Becky Scioscia at bscioscia@powayusd.com .

5th GRADE PANORAMIC PICTURE
The 5th grade panoramic picture had to be scheduled because of the rain. It will take place this Friday at 9:30 AM.

4th GRADE STAR WRITING TEST
Every year, fourth grade students across the state are required to take a writing test. This test, which is called the California Writing Standards Tests (CSTs in writing) has been administered annually since 2001 Our students will be required to produce one of four types of writing: narratives, summaries, information reports, or responses to literature. Our fourth grade students will be taking their writing test on March 3. The California Department of Education state has an excellent online guide to the test that is very informative and offers sample student writing responses. It can be viewed at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/sr/documents/cstgr4wrttg.pdf

E-PACKETS
The launch of our green e-Packets was a huge success even though I accidently put a period at the end of the website (sorry!). We had over 1300 hits within the first 24 hours after it was sent. Thanks again for supporting our efforts. Please watch for the ConnectEd email this Wednesday.

FRIDAY FLAG
Last week we had to once again cancel Friday Flag because of the rain. Certificates for our Butterfly Catch winners were delivered to classrooms. Celebrity Club winners will be acknowledged at this week’s ceremony. We will also have a guest speaker from Crime Prevention in Poway who will address our students about stranger danger.

MONARCH TV
The next edition of Monarch TV will take place this Friday in the MPR immediately following Friday flag.

NO SCHOOL NEXT WEEK
There will be no school next week in observance of President’s week.

PTA
Fun Run

Our 3rd Annual Fun Run Fundraiser will take place on Wednesday, March 4th. Funds raised will directly benefit our school by providing sponsored PTA programs such as our Music program with Mr. Lee, Family Nights, Teacher Mini-Grants, Running Club and funding for so many other programs in our school. Students will run laps around the grass area. Any student who raises $25 will earn a t-shirt and students who earn $50 will also earn a Fun Run Hat. Pledge forms went home last week and are due back on February 13.

FOUNDATION
Talent Show Update

The First Annual Monarch Talent Show (March 11) is quickly approaching. The show promises to have fun and exciting performances and is a MUST SEE EVENT! If your child has registered to perform in the talent show their act must be previewed (auditioned) before February 25. Auditions are held Wednesdays from 1:40-2:30PM in the MP room and usually only take a few minutes per act. There are only two audition dates left: Wednesday, February 11 and Wednesday, February 25. Tickets for the Talent Show will be for sale this month. More information will be forthcoming. For questions, please email suneethig@hotmail.com.

Recycling
The next school recycling date is Thursday, February 12, before school at the flag pole. We are in desperate need of your CRV water bottles and soda cans (no milk containers, please). The amount of recycling has significantly dropped, so your support of this important program is greatly appreciated. The dollars earned go right back to the school. Butterfly catches will be given to all children who participate. Hope to see you on Thursday!

Dine out at Panera and Shop at Gepetto’s
February Dine-out will be on Thursday, Feb. 12th at Panera Bread Co. in 4S Town Commons from 3pm-7pm. We will also have a Shopping Fundraiser at Geppetto's during the hours of 3pm-7pm! Panera's will donate 10% of sales and Gepetto's will donate 15% of sales to MRE. Show your loved one's how much you care by celebrating Valentine's a little early! Take them to dinner or pick up a gift and support our school at the same time! Please print out your copies of the flyers at www.mrespta.com/epackets
