California Launches New Web Site to Better Communicate With“This new on-line resource is the product of parent, teacher, and community member requests for an easy-to-access tool to help parents better understand their children’s test scores,” O’Connell said. “We hope that the information on this Web site will lead to increased collaboration between parents and educators and ultimately increased student learning.”
After listening to concerns expressed by parents and teachers, the California Department of Education (CDE) and the State Board of Education produced the new Web site: www.starsamplequestions.org, which features dozens of actual test questions that students have faced at every grade level.
The Web site is easily searchable and includes information about what levels of performance the state expects of students as well as which students take the tests. The site also offers grade-level parents’ guides that are easily printable.

Join the PTA PSA campaign
New videos get to the heart of family involvement
Just in time for the new school year, the California State PTA has launched a public service announcement (PSA) campaign to engage families and promote PTA. These video announcements feature real PTA members speaking straight from the heart about the benefits and rewards of getting involved in their children's public schools. (They were made possible through the generous support of the Pearson Foundation.)

Emergency Preparedness – Wildfires
Families, businesses and schools throughout San Diego County are
aware of the devastating wildfires of 2003 and 2007. Reminder that fire
preparedness is essential.
Last month many county residents received the CD “Before the
Threat”. A collaborative effort between the San Diego Association
of Fire Chiefs, Farmers Insurance and the San Diego County Office of
Emergency Services noting specific fire protection steps that our
families and businesses need to be familiar with and working to
implement.

Distracted Driving - A risk not worth
taking!
Virginia Tech study confirms
texting while driving is a huge risk. The results of the National Youth
Traffic Safety Month survey that was sponsored by The Allstate
Foundation indicated that although youth realize it is dangerous - they
still text and drive. The Virginia Tech study found texting while
driving increases the risk of a crash much more than previous studies
have concluded with motorists taking their eyes off the road longer than
they do when talking or listening on their cell phones.
Dialing a cell phone and using or reaching for an electronic device
increased risk of collision about 6 times in cars and trucks. Right
before a crash or near collision, drivers spent nearly five seconds
looking at their devices, which was enough time at 55 mph to cover more
than the length of a football field.
