AVID is designed for students who normally would not have the knowledge or resources to gain college admission. When looking at candidates for the program, we first look for students who are intelligent (as evidenced by standardized tests), but whose grades are disproportionately low in comparison. Typically, these students are first in their family to go to college, low SES, from underrepresented ethnicities in the educational system, or have other factors that limit their high school success. The magic ingredient is, the students are determined to be successful. AVID is not a solution for lack of motivation, rather a vehicle to empower intelligent students to access college.
