A-G Requirements:

A: History/Social Science – 20 course credits required. Two years of history/social science, including one year of world history, cultures and geography; and one year of US history or one-half year of US history and one-half year of civics or American government.

B: English – 4 years required Four years of college-preparatory English that include frequent and regular writing, and reading of classic and modern literature. Not more than two semesters of ninth-grade English and no more than one year of ESL-type courses can be used to meet this requirement.

C: Mathematics – 3 years required, 4 years recommended Three years of college-preparatory mathematics that include the topics covered in elementary and advanced algebra and two-and three-dimensional geometry. Approved integrated math courses may be used to fulfill part or all of this requirement

D: Laboratory Science – 2 years required, 3 years recommended Two years of laboratory science providing fundamental knowledge in two of these three core disciplines: biology (which includes anatomy, physiology, marine biology, aquatic biology, etc.) chemistry and physics. The final two years of an approved three-year integrated science program may be used to fulfill this requirement. Not more than one year of ninth-grade laboratory science can be used to meet this requirement.

E: Language other than English – 2 years required, 3 years recommended Two years of the same language other than English. Courses should emphasize speaking and understanding, and include instruction in grammar, vocabulary, reading, composition and culture.

F: Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) – 1 year required. Two semesters of approved arts courses from a single VPA discipline: dance, drama/theater, music or visual art.

G: College Preparatory Electives – 1 year required One year (two semesters), in addition to those required in “a-f” above, chosen from the following areas: visual and performing arts (non-introductory level courses), history, social science, English, advanced mathematics, laboratory science and language other than English (a third year in the language used for the “e” requirement or two years of another language).

PROGRESS NOTICE
Parents of any student who is in danger of failing shall be notified through a six-week grade report or through a personal conference whenever it becomes evident to the teacher that the student is in danger of failing a course. Such notification must be made to the parent long before the end of the grading period so that the student will have adequate time to achieve a passing grade in the course. Progress Reports are distributed at the 6 week marking period during 3 period, and are to be carried home by the student. Trimester report cards will be mailed home.

Counselors may call from time to time as counseling problems require input from parents.
Assistant Principals will mail home a copy of written referrals, may telephone parents regarding a problem situation, and will telephone or otherwise directly contact the parent before any suspension goes into effect.

Blue Cards – Students who are having academic difficulty are often encouraged to carry a blue card each week to every teacher and then take it home. Parents may have their student pick up a blue card in the Sun Center prior to class on any day of the week.

Learning Point.org – Most teachers post weekly assignments and grades on www.learningpoint.org. In order for students to create an account, they must register in each of their teacher’s classes. Tutoring Resources (top):

The private tutor list was a free service, offered through Poway Unified School District, as a service to our parents. Due to budget cutbacks, the private tutor list will be discontinued on June 1, 2009. 

Academic Intervention and Monitoring (AIM) (top):

Students that fall below a 2.0 GPA for any progress report become part of our AIM program.  There are a range of interventions for students for students that fall below a 2.0GPA.  These interventions could range from enrollment in an academic success course to and informal discussion with your counselor.  We do offer some suggestions for families to help them keep track of their student progress and what to do if that progress is not satisfactory.  That information can be found on our 'Being Proactive in the Trimester' suggestion sheet.
