A message from MT. CARMEL HIGH SCHOOL

March 1, 2013

Hi Sundevil Parents:

Last week, I heard high praise for a program called “What I Wish My Parents Knew…” that was presented at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts.  I am happy to report that the program was so popular that they will be offering it again next Wednesday, March 6, from 7:00 – 8:45 p.m. at the same location (15498 Espola Road in Poway.)  The program is free but tickets are required and can be obtained in advance at the Mt. Carmel High School reception desk as well as at Poway and Del Norte High Schools.

This forum was created as the result of a town hall meeting last year where community members brainstormed ways to keep their children from using drugs and alcohol.  It starts with two short videos including one in which local PUSD students talk about what they wish their parents knew about teenagers’ lives.  The videos will be followed with break-out sessions on drugs and alcohol, depression, creating boundaries that actually work, communication, social media and academic pressure.  The forum was developed through the joint efforts of local PUSD principals and students as well as community representatives from more than 45 local faith-based groups.

Our children are growing up in a challenging world, and as I shared earlier, I heard strongly positive feedback about the value of this program from parents who attended it last week.  One of the things I most admire about the Sundevil community is the common commitment of parents to the students at our school.  It truly does “take a village” as we work together to support not just our own children, but their friends as well.  It really is Great to be a Sundevil!
