FILIPINO AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH

Yesterday, we learned about the “First Wave” of Filipino Immigration. The “Second Wave” begins in the early 1900’s. This wave was comprised mostly of single men from the Ilocos Norte region of the Philippines who were promised large salaries but were not told that their tickets to America, their food, clothes, and housing would be deducted  from their pay. Thus, they endured long and hot days performing backbreaking labor for very little pay. Many of these men found not the “American Dream” but instead, encountered harsh treatment, job discrimination, and laws that banned inter-racial marriages.
