Course Description (Main Areas)

BADMINTON/TENNIS 1402 Grades 10-12
Recommended Prerequisite: None
Badminton/tennis is offered to students interested in acquiring skills in an exciting lifetime sport. The course will offer the basic skills and knowledge to perform the activity at the novice level.

BASKETBALL/VOLLEYBALL - 1412 Grades 10-12
Recommended Prerequisite: None
Basketball is a course designed to increase the student’s proficiency in the sport through learning and practicing fundamental skills, rules, and techniques. Volleyball is a course in which students are taught the four basic skills of volleyball: bump, set, spike, and serve. The rules and strategy of the game are also covered.

AEROBICS – 1427 Grades 10-12
Aerobics is a course in which students are taught basic dance movements, rhythmic fundamentals and breathing methods. Students are also introduced to the use of weights as a means of training and conditioning. Objectives of the course include developing and improving cardiovascular fitness.

MODERN DANCE – 1432 Grades 10-12
Recommended Prerequisite: None
Modern Dance is a course that teaches dance exercises and techniques, movement exploration through creative improvisation, and elementary dance composition.

FLAG FOOTBALL/WEIGHTS – 1435 Grades 10-12
Recommended Prerequisite: None
Flag Football is an introductory course that will include fundamental offensive and defensive formations, basic plays and strategies, and rules without physical contact. Weight training includes required exercises for the major muscle groups.

BEGINNING RAQUETBALL – 1458 Grades 9-12
Beginning Racquetball is a course in which students are taught the fundamental skills of three-wall racquetball, including the serve, forehand shots, backhand shots, and two- and three-wall shots, as well as rules, court position, and simple game strategies.

SOCCER/WEIGHTS – 1464 Grades 10-12
Recommended Prerequisite: None
Soccer is a course in which students are taught a wide variety of soccer skills including kicking, passing, heading, dribbling, and goalkeeping. Students are also taught game rules and game strategy.

ADVANCED BASKETBALL – 1414 Grades 10-12
Recommended Prerequisite: Approval of instructor
Advanced Basketball is a course designed to refine intermediate skills and to teach more difficult techniques.

INTERMEDIATE DANCE – 1429 Grades 10-12
Recommended Prerequisite: Teacher Approval
Intermediate Dance is designed to give those students with previous experience a chance to progress onto more challenging dance techniques. Choreography, vocabulary of dance, and elements of critiquing the art of dance will be included in the class. In addition, performances of choreographed and original dance routines will be mandatory.

ADVANCED DANCE – 1430 Grades 10-12
Recommended Prerequisite: Recommendation of teacher
Advanced Dance is an accelerated class designed to explore dance from many vantage points. Advanced dance technique will be the basis of the class. Choreography, dance history, interpretive qualities, and originality will complement the class. Performance of original choreographies will be mandatory. Elements of critiquing the art of dance will be refined.

ADVANCED VOLLEYBALL – 1490 Grades 10-12
Recommended Prerequisite: Recommendation of teacher
Advanced Volleyball is a course in which students practice the basic skills of volleyball: bump, set, spike, and serve. Students are taught advanced offensive and defensive techniques.

ADVANCED WRESTLING/WEIGHTS – 1495 Grades 10-12
Recommended Prerequisite: Teacher Approval
Wrestling is designed to introduce wrestling to those students who have no experience on the high school level. Emphasis will be placed on the rules and on the fundamental moves of the sport.

ADVANCED FOOTBALL – 1496 Grades 10-12
Recommended Prerequisite: Recommendation of teacher
Advanced Football/Weight Training is a course designed to enhance the basic fundamentals of football and provide a program for physical conditioning.

ADVANCED SWIMMING – 1472 Grades 10-12
Advanced Swimming is designed to provide more capable learners in swimming with an opportunity to expand their knowledge and skills. Emphasis will be on improving the four competitive strokes, starts, turns, etc.

MARCHING PHYSICAL EDUCATION – 1198 Grades 9-12
Recommended Prerequisite: Membership in Band, all Flags.
Marching Physical Education is designed to develop a well-coordinated and precise marching unit. Students will learn to prepare and execute marching, dance, and drill routines. All band and auxiliary groups attached to the band are required to take this course. A maximum of fifteen credits of Marching Physical Education and Tall Flags-Color guard may be applied toward the Physical Education graduation requirement.

TALL FLAGS – COLOR GUARD – 1197 Grades 9-12
Recommended Prerequisite: None.
The Color guard class provides students with the opportunity to develop musical/visual concepts, skills, and interpretations. These concepts will be used in conjunction with the marching program and the indoor tall flag instruction. The Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association and the California Tall Flag Association, in addition to teacher observation will provide evaluation. Tall Flags/Color guard satisfies Fine Art requirement.

PRINCIPLES OF SPORTS MEDICINE/ATHLETIC TRAINING - Grades 10-12
Pre-requisites: Gade of B or better in Biology and good citizenship grades of either "G" or "O".  This class introduces students to the profession of athletic training and sports medicine. Areas studied include the role of the athletic trainer in sports medicine, mechanisms of athletic injuries, tissue response to injury, blood-borne pathogens, introductory techniques of the assessment and evaluation of athletic injuries, emergency procedures, general illnesses common with athletes, and dermatological conditions.

TRACK AND FIELD PREP – 1483 Grades 10-12
Track and Field is a course in which students are taught sprinting, middle distance running, pole vaulting, long distance running, high jumping, long jumping, relay running, hurdling, and putting the shot. Students are also taught the rules of each track and field event.

ADVANCED BASEBALL – 1410 Grades 10-12
Advanced Baseball/Weight Training is a course designed to enhance the basic fundamentals of baseball and rovide a program for physical conditioning.

FRESHMAN PHYSICAL EDUCATION – 1400, 1401 Grade 9
Recommended Prerequisite: Freshman status.
Freshman P.E. is designed for freshman students to introduce them to physical education at the high school level. During the freshman year, the students will be exposed to six different activities, including one from each of the following: aquatics, individual and dual sports, team sports, and fitness.
