Course Description (Main Areas)


HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH 1 – 0301 Grade 9
Recommended Prerequisite: None. High School English 1 is designed to integrate reading and writing and prepare students for future high school English Classes. This course will develop the short story and teach them to write fluent descriptive, narrative, and expository also prepare students to pass the proficiencies, improve their spelling, and increase their vocabulary.

HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH 2 – 0302 Grade 9
Recommended Prerequisite: None. High School English 2 is designed to further integrate reading and writing in preparation for the more difficult high school English classes. It will improve the students’ ability to write fluent papers, edit, and proofread their writing. Students will continue their study of vocabulary, spelling, usage, grammar, and punctuation. They will also be introduced to the novel, poetry, drama, and begin writing multi-paragraph compositions.


HONORS HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH 1 – 0303 Grade 9
Recommended prerequisite: Teacher recommendation.
Honors High School English 1 is an advanced version of Composition 1. Therefore, it accelerates student’s exposure to the short story, the novel, and teaches them to write fluent descriptive, narrative, and expository paragraphs which have a controlling idea, adequate development, a sense of closure, unity, coherence, and transition. It will also introduce students to multi-paragraph compositions and skills for advanced literary analysis. The course will improve student’s spelling, vocabulary, usage, and grammar. It will prepare them to pass the proficiencies.

HONORS HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH 2 – 0304 Grade 9
Recommended Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation.
Honors High School English 2 is an advanced version of Literature 1, therefore, it accelerates students’ exposure to literature, writing skills, and literary analysis. It is designed to further improve the students’ ability to write fluent paragraphs and multi-paragraph essays. It requires them to edit and proofread their writing, introduces them to poetry and drama. The course will further improve students’ spelling, vocabulary, usage, grammar, and punctuation.

HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH 3-4 – 0310, 0311 Grades 10-12
Recommended Prerequisite: None Through the Thematic and integrated study of literature and written composition, students will broaden their knowledge of literature, develop writing and thinking skills, hone punctuation and grammar skills, and further improve listening and speaking skills in individual and collaborative settings.

HONORS HUMANITIES 1-2 – 0313, 0314 Grade 10
Recommended Prerequisite: Honors 9th Grade English, teacher recommendation. Honors Humanities begins a yearlong study of man's relationship with society, nature, and himself. At the same time the course will emphasize expository expression, both written and oral, in line with the PUSD's Academic Standards. Through literary exploration, classroom activities and by accessing outside resources the students will gain and be able to demonstrate an understanding of the development and influences on Western humanities. Fulfills UC B requirement.

RHETORICAL READING AND WRITING – 0315 Grades 11-12
Expository Reading and Writing prepares college-bound seniors for the literacy demands of higher education. Students in this year-long, rhetoric-based course will become more proficient in expository, analytical, and argumentative reading and writing, increasing their awareness of the rhetorical strategies employed by authors and applying those same strategies to their own writing. They will read closely: (1) to examine the relationship between an author’s argument or theme and his or her audience and purpose; (2) to analyze the impact of structural and rhetorical strategies on a reading audience; and
(3) to examine the social, political, and philosophical assumptions that underlie a specific text. Course texts include contemporary essays, newspaper and magazine articles, editorials, reports, biographies, memos, assorted public documents, and other non-fiction. Instruction in research methods and documentation conventions will also be provided. This course meets the UC/CSU “a” requirement and English graduation requirements

AMERICAN LITERATURE 1-2 – 0387, 0388 Grade 12
Recommended Prerequisite: A or B in Junior Year English Class, Recommended to take APEL but not required Advanced Placement English Literature 1-2 is a college-level course designed to prepare students to take the Advanced Placement English Literature examination. The course focuses on examples of British literature, mainly poetry, from the English Renaissance through the Twentieth Century, acquainting students with various genres and themes. Emphasis will be placed on a close reading of the individual literary work. In addition, attention may be given to the historical and psychological characteristics of the authors. Students also will be expected to write and respond to compare and contrast prompts, prose pieces, literary analysis, AP prompts, and non-fiction.

AP ENGLISH LANGUAGE 1-2 – 0372, 0373 Grade 11
Recommended Prerequisite: “B+” or higher in previous English courses Honors Survey of American Literature 1-2 provides an overview of the development of the short story, poem, novel, and play in America. The course is taught at a faster pace and in greater depth than the regular American Literature 1-2. Major periods of writing covered include the Puritans, the Revolutionaries, the Transcendentalists, the Realists, and the modern writers. Emphasis on the historical and psychological contexts in which the literature was produced is included as well as the stylistic characteristics of the authors. Examples of authors studied are Bradford, Irving, Poe, Hawthorne, Emerson, Twain, Crane, James, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Steinbeck, and Vonnegut. Students will be expected to do written literary analysis as well. This course may be used to meet the UC “B” or “G” requirement and the CSU English requirement.

WRITING SEMINAR 1-2 – 0363, 0364 Grade 12
This meets elective requirement for CSU/UC Writing Seminar I & II will explore and analyze the structure and stylistic devices of many different types of literary works (exposition, narrative, poetic), focusing on the differences and similarities across compositional modes. Students will demonstrate their learning using two methods: students will write analytic essays and will incorporate their knowledge of structure and style in their own writing. Emphasis will be placed on using form and voice appropriate to the writing task and audience. In addition, students will be required to complete a senior exhibition Portfolio and a Senior Exit Speech. Also, important to this course will be the study of Expository Reading and Writing incorporating two of the units into each semester. Meets PUSD Graduation Requirement for English.

BRITISH LITERATURE 1-2 – 0384, 0385 Grade 12
Recommended Prerequisite: Permission of Instructor Survey of British Literature 1-2 is a course designed to acquaint students with various genres and themes of English literature from Beowulf to Tolkein as well as with the societies that produced the writers. A general introduction to old and middle English will be followed by a study of the Renaissance, the Seventeenth Century, the Restoration and Eighteenth Century, and the Romantic, Victorian, and Modern periods. Students are expected to discuss the literature orally and to interpret and do a comparative analysis of the literature in writing. The elements of literature included in this course are plot, theme, conflict, mood, characterization, foreshadowing, irony, symbolism, and setting. Fulfills UC B requirement.

BRITISH LITERATURE 1-2 ONLINE – 0384, 0385 Grade 12
Recommended Prerequisite: Permission of Instructor British Literature Online is developed using California and Poway Unified District Standards to teach students literature from the British Isles in an online environment. The course follows the history as the language and material develop from Anglo-Saxon times to present history and readings. Readings include such texts as Beowulf, Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, Shakespeare's Macbeth, and moving on to Donne, Wordsworth, Shelley and Orwell. Students in the online class meet once a week during a lab day to turn in assignments, along with taking tests, engaging in discussions and taking notes regarding lectures. The class is structured similar to a college environment with papers being turned in weekly and assignments being given at least six weeks in advance. Part of the senior standards that will be given in this class include a literary analysis of Shakespeare's Macbeth, a senior speech regarding a poem, and a reading comprehension test. Other assignments include designing a virtual Power Point tour of a city in England and a creative project on Orwell's novel.

WORLD LITERATURE 1-2 – 0393, 0394 Grade 12
Recommended Prerequisite: Permission of Instructor World Literature is designed as a survey course intended to give students the widest possible exposure to the literature of the world. Authors studied, but not limited are Victor Hugo, William Shakespeare, Dante Alighieri, Philosophers – Aristotle, Plato, Socrates, Paulo Coelho. The focus of the literature is to discover the similarities that all cultures posses through literature. In addition students will learn to respond to non-fiction and the elements of ethos, pathos, and logos. Students will be required to complete a Senior Exhibition Portfolio and a Senior Exit Speech. UC B English requirement.

WORLD LITERATURE 1-2 ONLINE Grade 12
Recommended Prerequisite: Permission of Instructor Online World Literature is designed as a teacher to student online communication course. Continual daily interaction between teacher/student and student/student will occur. Online World Literature is designed as a survey course intended to give students the widest possible exposure to the literature of the world. Authors studied, but not limited are Victor Hugo, William Shakespeare, Dante Alighieri, Philosophers – Aristotle, Plato, Socrates, Paulo Coelho. The focus of the literature is to discover the similarities that all cultures posses through literature. In addition students will learn to respond to non-fiction and the elements of ethos, pathos, and logos. Students will be required to complete a Senior Exhibition Portfolio and a Senior Exit Speech. In addition to the UC English requirement fulfillment, Online World Literature fulfills the computer requirement.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT ENGLISH 1-2 – 0370, 0371 Grade 12
Recommended Prerequisite: 3.5 GPA plus department approval Advanced Placement English 1-2 is a college-level course designed to prepare students to take the Advanced Placement English examination. The course presents examples of Western literary development from the Greeks through the Twentieth Century, acquainting students with various genres and themes. Emphasis will be placed on a close reading of the individual literary work. In addition, attention may be given to the historical and psychological characteristics of the authors. Students also will be expected to write expository, creative, and research papers.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS (ELL) 1-2 – 0326, 0327 Grades 9-12
Recommended Prerequisite: None. English as a Second Language (ESL) is a comprehensive course which takes students with little or no English proficiency or literacy and develops their functional literacy and language arts skills to a level of proficiency, which enables them to be successful in regular academic classes. Based on language acquisition theory, instruction utilizes an integrated approach, which blends listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Ultimately, the course develops the English/Language Arts knowledge, skills, and attitudes and helps students to become productive members of society.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS (ELL) 3-4 – 0328, 0329 Grades 9-12
Recommended Prerequisite: None. READ 180 1-2 – 0305, 0306 Grade 9
Recommended Prerequisite: None READ 180 is a course designed to provide intensive instruction in reading for ninth graders. The course uses the Scholastic READ 180 software program and is being piloted at Poway High School during the 2003-04 school year. Students ear elective credit for the course
