CHILD DEVELOPMENT AND PSYCHOLOGY 1-2 –
0932, 0933 Grades 10-Adult
Recommended Prerequisites: Life Management Skills during first semester with
a grade of A or B. Child
Development and Psychology 1-2 is a comprehensive study of the developmental
stages of children from conception through early adolescence. This course
includes theories, research and the range of practices related to the
development of children. Hereditary, environmental, cultural, and
socio-economic factors that influence human behavior and abilities are also
addressed. The students will understand how the role of families, schools,
and communities are integral to the successful development of children
throughout their lives. Studies include field practicum experiences for
observation, interaction, investigation, and application of behavioral and
learning theories presented in the course. *This class is an A-G/UC approved
course. ROP Certificate will be awarded upon 90+ class hours. The student
may have a choice of receiving Practical Art credit or college elective
credit.
CLOTHING 1-2 – 0608, 0609 Grades 9-12
Recommended Prerequisite: None. Clothing 1 – 2 prepares students to
construct ready-to-wear garments and accessories from commercial patterns.
Students engage in “hands-on” learning experiences from selecting sewing
tools, fabric, laying out the pattern on fabric, cutting, sewing on standard
sewing machines, and the use of various hand stitches and pressing
techniques. Measuring, fitting, seam finishing, fabric, clothing care and
decision making are included. This class articulates for Palomar College
credit.
CLOTHING 3-4-5-6 – 0610, 0611, 0612, 0613
Grades 10-12
Prerequisite: Clothing 1-2
This course builds on the skills acquired in Clothing 1-2. Sewing projects
involving more detail, new techniques, and more challenging fabrics are
included. Instruction in the areas of textiles, colors, wardrobe planning,
historical influences, and careers are also examined.
FASHION DESIGN AND HISTORY 1-2 – 0930,
0931 Grades 10-Adult
Prerequisite: Clothing 1 helpful but not required.
Fashion Design and History 1-2 prepares students for entry into one of the
nation’s largest industries as merchandising assistants, buyers, and
department store managers. The two-fold purpose of the program incorporates
professional preparation for a fashion design career, and possibilities for
self-employment. These skills make a student immediately employable, and
many students find part-time employment while completing the program. *This
class is A-G/UC approved course and is articulated for waiver credit at
Palomar College. ROP Certificate will be awarded upon 90+ class hours. The
student may have a choice of receiving Fine Art or Practical Art credit.
FIBER ARTS 1-2 Grades 9-12
Prerequisite: none Fiber Arts 1-2 introduces the student to the fundamentals
of fibers and textiles, and fabric design and their functions. Creative
expression is emphasized, placed on the basic study and the creative process
of the principles and elements of art and design. Included in the course
will be basic drawing. Students will analyze the artistic nature of fabric.
Content will include cultural and historical influences of fibers and
textile art. This course is project based. *This course is A-G/UC approved.
The student may have a choice of receiving Fine Art or Practical Art credit.
LIFE MANAGEMENT SKILLS – 0640 Grades 9-12
Recommended Prerequisites: None. (Highly recommend as a prerequisite to all
courses offered in Consumer and Family Studies)
This introductory semester course introduces four subject areas available
for further study in the Consumer and Family Studies Department. The
learning unites include: nutrition, family living and relationships, child
care, and decision-making skills. The emphasis is on projects, group
dynamics, problem solving, exploration of possibilities for further study,
and career opportunities.
