Meadowbrook Phone Call-outs 2008-2009

11/30/08 Hi, this is Cathy Brose, principal of MBMS.  I hope that you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving.  This week at MBMS we will begin our Holiday Food Drive.  We will be collecting canned and non-perishable items to donate to needy families in the Poway area.  Please help those less fortunate by making a donation.  Need a gift idea?  The student store has new spirit wear...t-shirts, sweatshirts and more. Check it out!  6th graders - camp is just around the corner.  Information will be coming home this week. Finally, the latest edition of Meadowbrook Matters, the school/PTSA newsletter is now posted on the MBMS website.  I encourage you to take a look.  Thanks and have a great week.

11/21/08 Hi, this is Cathy Brose, principal of MBMS with an important reminder.  Today, Friday, students were given their first trimester report cards to bring home.  Please ask to see them and talk to your student about their grades.  Also, there is no school next week to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday.  I hope you will be able to share some quality time with family and friends. Even thought times may be difficult, we still have so much to be thankful for.  Enjoy the week and we will see you on December first.

11/16/08 Hi, this is Cathy Brose, principal of MBMS. Tuesday, Nov. 18, is our bi-monthly principal's coffee.  In order to allow those of you that work the chance to meet with me, we will be having the meeting at 7 PM in the evening in the library.  This is an opportunity to share your comments, questions and concerns.  I hope you will be able to join me.  Last Friday was the end of the first trimester.  Teachers are finishing up grades and report cards will be coming home this Friday, Nov. 21.  Students who receive a 3.5 or greater will make the honor roll.  New this year is the ATC or Above the Crowd recognition.  This is for students who receive all O's in citizenship or all O's and only one "G".  Both honor roll and ATC students will be invited to attend an awards event in January.  Finally, remember that all students must have their student ID's with them every day in order to purchase lunch, check out books, or use the computers.  If you child has lost their ID, he/she can buy a new one in the library.  The cost is $5.00.  Thanks and have a great week!

11/9/08 Hi, this is Cathy Brose, principal of MBMS with a very important reminder.  Tomorrow, Monday, Nov. 10 is a regular school day for all MBMS students.  Tuesday, Nov. 11, there is no school to honor our veteran's.  Again, there IS school on Monday for all MBMS students.  Wednesday evening at 7 pm is the next PTSA association meeting in the library.  Come find out how the PTSA is supporting the school and your child.  Thanks to everyone for your support of the PE-A-Thon.  We raised $11,000!  Some of this money will be used immediately to purchase document cameras, printers, and vcr/dvd players for our classrooms.  We really appreciate your generosity.  Speaking of generosity, MBMS students should be very proud of their support of breast cancer research.  On Pink Day a couple of weeks ago, we raised over $1200 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.  Thank you for caring and sharing and have a great week!

11/2/08 Hi, this is Cathy Brose, principal of MBMS with some very important messages.  Tomorrow, Monday, after school from 2:30 – 3:30, you may pick up your Yankee Candle orders in room 121 on the front of the school.  This is the ONLY day to pick up the orders, so please make sure that you or your child picks up the order.  Tuesday, Nov. 4th, we will be having a mock election at MBMS.  Students will have a chance to vote for the presidential candidate of their choice.  Students must have an ID card to vote.  We hope all students will take the opportunity to exercise their Constitutional rights by voting.  The MBMS Choirs are having a fundraiser at Islands Restaurant in Carmel Mountain Ranch on Wednesday, November 5th, from 5 to 9 pm. This event is open to all MBMS students, their families, and anyone else who presents one of our fliers at the restaurant. The Meadowbrook Choirs will receive 20% of sales, and are encouraging everyone to attend to make the fundraiser successful and fun. Fliers are available in the school office, from Choir members, and at the MBMS Website.  Thanks and have a great week.

10/26/08 Hi, this is Cathy Brose, principal of MBMS.  Tomorrow, Monday, will be vision and hearing screening for all 8th graders.  This screening is done annually by our District nurses.  Parents will be notified if any follow up is needed. Thursday is the last day to check the Lost and Found Cart. It is filled with lots of sweaters, jackets and other items of clothing.  Claim your lost items by Thursday.  All unclaimed items will be sent to charity.  Thursday, students may wear Halloween costumes to school.  Please remember no full face masks or weapons.  Dress code applies! The Halloween Dance, Scream Scene, is Thursday, from 2:30 - 4:30. Tickets are on sale during lunch Monday through Wednesday only and cost $5.00.   Remember, you must have your ID card to purchase a ticket.  Speaking of ID cards, it is important for ALL students to bring their ID cards to school every day.  Just like we need a passport when we travel abroad or adults need a driver's license to operate a motor vehicle students ID's are essential in order to purchase lunch, check out books or have computer access.  Lost ID's can be replaced for $5.00.  Please, BRING YOUR ID EVERY DAY!  Finally, Friday, October 31st is Professional Growth Day for teachers.  There is no school for students.  Thanks and have a great week.

10/19/08 Hi, this is Cathy Brose, principal of MBMS.  This is Red Ribbon and Character Counts week at MBMS.  Students will get red wristbands to wear on Monday, classes will be decorating doors with anti drug messages and everyone is encouraged to wear red on Wednesday.  We are announcing Meadowbrook’s new Recycling Program!  The PTSA and Encore Choir challenge you to show good character and RECYCLE!  From October 20th through the 24th, during Character Counts! /Red Ribbon Week, you can bring your separated, bagged recyclables to school in the morning.  In the near future, we will also begin recycling on campus and during lunch. Help keep our campus clean and the earth green!  This Wednesday is the annual PE-A-Thon.  The PE-A-Thon raises money for the MEF.  The Foundation will use the money to purchase document cameras and other needed supplies for the school.  Also this Wednesday is the PUSD College Fair from 4:30-8:30 PM at Westview HS.  This is an opportunity for you to explore college options.  Over 120 schools from across the US will have representatives here to explain their programs, talk about requirements and give suggestions for financial assistance.  We hope you will attend.  Finally, as part of the construction, you may notice that certain engineering controls are being used, including buildings that are sealed off with plastic and have signs stating, "Danger, Asbestos, Cancer and Lung Disease, Authorized Personnel Only".  There may also be workers present who are wearing a protective suit and face mask.  Please know that these are NORMAL BUSINESS PRACTICES for the removal of these types of materials from our buildings.  This is a very safe and common process.  If you need more information, you can request a letter explaining the process further or you can contact Ms. Wendy Belanger at wbelanger@powayusd.com.  Thanks and have a great week!

10/13/08 Hi, this is Cathy Brose, principal of MBMS. Progress Reports went home last Friday.  Be sure to ask to see your son or daughter's report.  If you have questions, please call or email your child's teacher. Tomorrow, Monday, is a regular school day for students.  We do NOT take the Columbus Day holiday.  Wednesday, Oct. 15th, is a minimum day for professional growth.  Students will be dismissed at 12:30.  Thursday, Oct. 16, the Meadowbrook after-school program is hosting an open house called Lights On After School from 3-6 PM.  Please join us in games, demonstrations, and to meet the staff!  Friday, Oct. 17 is Cookie Dough pickup day.  All orders will be distributed to parents between 2:00 and 4:30 PM in the gym. We strongly encourage parents to pick up any orders that exceed 4 boxes, due to weight.  Students with more than four boxes will not be allowed on the bus.  Please remember the school does not have any cold storage so parents are responsible for picking up the dough on the FRIDAY!  We appreciate your cooperation on this hugely successful fundraiser.  Finally, mark your calendars now and plan on attending the College Fair on Wednesday October 22 at Westview High School.  Over a 100 colleges will be represented.  More information will be coming next week.  Thanks and have a great week!

10/05/08 Hi, this is Cathy Brose, principal of MBMS.  I want to thank all of you who were able to attend parent conferences this last week. Hopefully the conferences were helpful and you have some idea of where your child is doing well, where they may need extra support, and how you can help.  As a follow up to the conferences, first trimester progress reports will be handed out and brought home this coming Friday, October 10th.  A quick construction update.  You have probably noticed the fence in front of the school. Grading and construction will soon begin on a new entrance to the school.  It should take about a month.  Your patience is appreciated.  Finally, the October/November newsletter is now available on the website.  Because of ever increasing costs, we will not be mailing it home this year.  Go to http://www.powayusd.com/PUSDMBMS.  Once there, click on the Meadowbrook Matters Newsletter.  Don't miss out!  Check it out!!!!  Thanks and have a great week!

9/28/08 Hi, this is Cathy Brose, principal of MBMS. This is parent conference week at MBMS. Tomorrow, Monday, there is no school for students and the rest of the week we will have minimum days. School will dismiss at 12:30 on Tuesday and 12:05 Wednesday through Friday. There will be no activity buses all week. Teachers have scheduled conferences with all students who are receiving low "C", "D" or "F" grades in any class. If you have not received a conference invitation and would like a conference, you can either call the teacher and request a time or come tomorrow morning between 7:30 and 10 am for a drop in conference. All teachers will be available at this time. Conferences are important and an opportunity to check on student progress and discuss student goals and needs for the year. We look forward to meeting with you. Attention all students...the Reflections deadline is fast approaching. Think of how you can take the theme, "WOW!" and create it through musical composition, dance choreography, film production, literature, visual arts and photography. And WOW!, take advantage of the extra time during conference week and WOW! PTSA and your family and friends with your creativity! Go to the MBMS website and click on Reflections for rules and entry forms. The deadline is Friday, Oct. 3rd. Entries must be submitted to the office. Thanks and have a great week!

9/08/08 Hi, this is Cathy Brose, principal of MBMS.  This Wednesday, Sept. 10 is Back to School Night at MBMS.  Back to School Night is an opportunity to meet your child's teachers and hear about the curriculum and plans for the year.  The evening will start at 5:45 with a PTSA meeting in the MPR.  The classroom presentations will start at 6:30.  Please be aware that parking is limited.  We will be parking on the upper field off Meadowbrook Lane but you are encouraged to carpool or park and walk up the street.  We also ask that students and siblings stay home since this is an information night for parents. This is a reminder that there are 2 openings on the Meadowbrook School Site Council for parent representatives.  Meetings are once a month on Tuesdays from 2:30-3:30.  If you are interested, please visit the MB homepage for more information or contact Christine Donnelly at the school. Don't forget the one and only turn in day for the ASB magazine drive is Tuesday, Sept. 9.  All orders must be turned in on Tuesday.  Orders are still being taken for Yankee Candles and Entertainment Books, the PTSA fundraisers.  Turn in your orders to the office or your basic ed teacher.  Thanks for supporting the ASB and PTSA.  Have a great week and we'll see you at BTSN on Wednesday!

8/29/08 Hi, this is Cathy Brose, principal of MBMS, with some important messages.  Picture make up day is Friday, Sept. 5.  Students who did not have their picture taken at registration or who would like their registration picture retaken, will have it done on Friday.  In order to make things easier and more efficient for parents and students, the attendance office has been moved to the front of the school. Parents should come here to check out students early or handle other attendance matters. Parents:  there are 2 openings on the Meadowbrook School Site Council for parent representatives.  We meet once a month on Tuesdays 2:30-3:30.  If you are interested, please visit the MB homepage for more information. The ASB magazine drive is continuing.  Money earned from the drive supports dances, rewards events and spirit days. You are also encouraged to support the two PTSA fundraisers, Yankee Candle and Entertainment books.  Information packets went home at registration.  PTSA fundraisers support classroom supplies and teacher needs, disaster supplies, and one time gifts to the school such as lunch tables and umbrellas.  All of these items make great gift ideas, so talk to your family and friends.  Your kids have probably shared that the classrooms are nice and toasty.  The ducting for the air conditioning was late in coming and is just now being installed.  The workers are moving as fast as they can without interrupting student learning.  We are hopeful that the entire school will be cool by mid September!  Finally, mark your calendars now.  Back to School Night is Sept. 10th.  I will have more information in next week's callout. Thanks and have a great week!!!

8/18/08 Hi, this is Cathy Brose, principal of MBMS.  Welcome to the new year!  School starts Tuesday, August 19th.  Since this is a Tuesday and our normal late start day, classes will begin at 8:55.  I realize the Parent Reference Book said earlier, but that was an error and I apologize for the confusion.  Students can pick up their schedules starting at 8 am in the quad.  For the first day, you will need a notebook and pencil, you don't need to bring your books.  As you probably noticed during registration an amazing amount of work has occurred this summer and I know you will be excited and proud of our new look!  There is still work to be done and some areas are fenced off, particularly the lunch area. We also are still waiting on air conditioning, but have temporary coolers in each of the classrooms.  We will all be practicing a bit of patience and flexibility the first few weeks, but it will be worth it.  Meadowbrook is a beautiful new campus! We look forward to seeing you for your first class at 8:55 on Tuesday.  Thanks and have a great week.

8/10/08 Hi, this is Cathy Brose, principal of MBMS.  School is rapidly approaching.  This week is packet pickup and registration week.  Monday, 8/11, is packet pickup day.  Times are from 7-9 AM, 11-12:30 PM and 3-6 PM.  Pickup will be in the front of the school.  Registration starts Tuesday and takes place daily from 8-12.  Tuesday 8/12 is registration for 8th graders.  6th graders register on Wednesday 8/13 and Thursday 8/14 is the day for 7th graders.  We register by last name, so please check the website for the exact time.  Students will have their pictures taken and ID's issued at registration.  They will also check out their textbooks.  Unfortunately, due to construction, NO lockers will be available this week.  All books will have to be taken home.  Lockers will be ready once school starts.  Also this year, bus passes will not be sold at the school site.  All bus passes must be purchased from the transportation department at the District offices on Twin Peaks Road.  We are looking forward to seeing all of you at registration.

8/08/08 HI, this is Cathy Brose, principal at MBMS and I am happy to welcome all of you to 6th grade.  I know you are probably a little nervous right about now, so I would like to remind you of our WEB orientation on Monday, August 11.  We will be meeting in the gym at 8:00 AM.  This is a chance for students to meet friends and learn about MBMS.  This is a student centered orientation and parents do not need to attend. While we are still having the orientation, we will not be able to give a campus tour and some of the activities may be cut short due to construction.  The crews are working feverishly to have things ready by the first day of school, so we have to stay out of their way.  For this reason, we are shortening the orientation by one hour.  The kids will be done and ready to be picked up at 11 AM.  Please know that it will still be a great opportunity to learn more about middle school and join others in games and activities.  Thanks for you understanding and we hope to see you Monday from 8

8/04/08 Hi, this is Cathy Brose, principal of MBMS.  I hope you have all had a great summer...I know I have.  Things at school have been very busy with lots of construction and modernization.  The campus is looking better every day and I am sure you will be amazed at the new Meadowbrook. Because of the construction and moving, the office will be closed until Wednesday, August 6.  Registration is August 12-14.  You can find more information on the website.  For those of you who are new to MBMS, I will be doing a weekly callout to keep you updated on any important dates and information you should be aware of.  You can also always call or email me with questions or concerns.  I am looking forward to a fantastic year.  Thanks and have a great week.
