Subject: Are you Ready for Football?

Dated November 12, 2009

Good Afternoon,

This is Greg Mizel, principal of Del Norte High School, HOME OF THE NIGHTHAWKS.

So, tomorrow is the last day of the first trimester! How about that? It seems like just yesterday we were hosting community meetings and campus tours – and now, here we are, live, and about to commence the second grading period.
I find it unbelievable - how quickly the NIGHTHAWKS have taken flight!

Tomorrow night we will be hosting our LAST football game, and while I am a HUGE fan of all of our fall athletes – much love to the cross country team, the boys’ water polo team, the girls’ tennis, golf, field hockey and volleyball teams – I’m hoping the entire community will come out and celebrate the passing of fall at this last home football game. I want to see our stands full of BLUE and GREEN. I’m really hoping to create a tangible, home field advantage for our boys.

In addition to raffling off another Sony VAIO laptop computer tomorrow night (tickets are only a buck!), we will be accepting donations for the DNHS PTSA Adopt-A-Family effort as well. Cash and gift cards will be accepted. We’ve adopted 10 local families in need this year, and any contribution you can make is appreciated.

Encourage your kids to hit the books hard tonight. They have one more set of finals to take – and then, hopefully, we can all enjoy the sunset together tomorrow evening.

GO NIGHTHAWKS!

Another Full Week of Activities

Good Afternoon,

This is Greg Mizel, principal of Del Norte High School, HOME OF THE NIGHTHAWKS.

Tomorrow evening, Del Norte will be hosting the annual PUSD College Fair. The event begins promptly at 6pm, and parking will likely be a challenge. Please plan to arrive early. We will have several food vendors here for those of you coming directly from work. The college fair aligns beautifully with the college readiness aspect of DNHS’s mission statement. Our hope is that you will plan to attend – taking advantage of the special workshops and the opportunity to meet with college recruiters. Almost 140 colleges and universities will be represented.

Additionally, this week is Red Ribbon Week, and Wednesday, Enrique Camarena will be on campus to address students in a special assembly. Enrique, son of Kiki Camarena, the police officer whose tragic death inspired Red Ribbon Week, will share his father’s story as well as his own.

Progress Reports, Parent Conferences, and more

Good Morning,

This is Greg Mizel, principal of Del Norte High School, HOME OF THE NIGHTHAWKS. I’m calling this morning with several important announcements.

First, students will be bringing home mid-trimester progress reports TODAY. Please review these reports with your son or daughter. If you have questions or concerns about your child’s progress - in any class - please email the appropriate teacher to set up a parent conference. Thursday and Friday will be minimum days with dismissal time at 12:52 p.m., freeing up the afternoons to support these important conversations.

Next, the PSAT will be administered at Del Norte this Wednesday. All students are strongly encouraged to take this exam (and asked to bring with them two Number 2 pencils). Students should report to their Homeroom classes at our normal start time: 8:10AM. Students will have until 11AM to complete the assessment. The standard class schedule, with shortened periods, will follow.

Students not taking the PSAT can study in the library.

Finally, Del Norte will be hosting the annual PUSD College Fair Tuesday, October 20th, starting at 6pm. Representatives from over a hundred colleges and universities will be on campus to meet with PUSD families. Please note, this event is not open to middle school students or their families.

It’s going to be another full week of activity for the NIGHTHAWKS!
