Hawks Nest

Welcome Chaparral Families:

I am so excited to serve as your new principal of Chaparral Elementary School! The Poway School District has a reputation of excellence. I am delighted to be joining a school culture focused on student learning, a commitment to high expectations, innovation and collaboration. It is my intention to carry on these important traditions and practices.

I would like to take this opportunity to share some information about my background so we can begin to get to know each other a little better. I attained my bachelor’s degree in liberal arts and elementary education from the University of San Diego. From there, I began my professional career working in the La Mesa Spring Valley School District, where I taught kindergarten and intervention classes. I then moved on to teach at the high school level for the Grossmont Union High School District, where I started a grant-funded intervention program, and taught at the continuation school. While teaching, I earned a master’s degree in Curriculum Design and Instructional Leadership, from National University. I then pursued my administrative services credential through SDSU. Most recently, I have served as a dean and assistant principal for four years in the Grossmont District.

Communication is crucial to a successful home/school partnership. I have become familiar with Connect-ED, a Web-based phone and email system that will allow me to keep you up to date on important school issues and events. Please expect weekly messages from me on Friday evenings at 6pm.

I look forward to meeting with staff and families to learn more about the unique strengths, traditions and practices of Chaparral. These conversations are essential to the discovery of what makes Chaparral such a special place for kids to learn. With my “open door” policy, I believe you will find me to be open, honest, caring, and accessible.

Parent and community volunteers are always welcome at Chaparral. In addition to volunteering in the classroom, you may wish to help out with our PTA or Foundation. Chaparral School has a very active and supportive PTA and Foundation. Watch for opportunities throughout the year to get involved.

Affectionately,

Dawn Zwibel
