7th GRADE BASIC EDUCATION
LANGUAGE ARTS– The 7th grade language arts classes encompass the study of grammar, word study, literature, and expository writing. Using the McDougal/Littell series, which is aligned not only with California state standards but also the districts’ standards and literacy goals, our students are provided with a well-balanced program.
SOCIAL STUDIES – The context of social studies for 7th grade includes history, geography, economics, and political systems. The ancient cultures of Africa, Middle East, Asia, Europe and Meso-America provide the foundation for the impact of feudalism, belief systems, and social changes that have taken place and their effect on society today.
7TH GRADE MATHEMATICS
PRE-ALGEBRA A: Pre-Algebra with support is a course designed to enhance students’ Number Sense skills while continuing to cover the necessary topics for the 7th grade curriculum. The placement for this course will be determined from the students’ 6th grade MAPs scores.
PRE-ALGEBRA: The topics in Pre-Algebra include an emphasis on fractions, integers, solving equations and inequalities, graphing linear equations, and problem solving.
ALGEBRA: The topics in Algebra include an emphasis on solving systems of equations, solving and graphing quadratics, polynomials, problem solving, and rational expressions. Placement in Algebra will be based on MAPS scores, CST results, and teacher recommendations based on performance in Pre-Algebra.
7TH GRADE SCIENCE
LIFE SCIENCE: Life Science covers the basics of life science, problem solving, the scientific method, cells, simple organisms, plants, animals, genetics, evolution, reproduction and sexually transmitted disease; the “Too Good for Drugs” program is continued.
7th Grade ELECTIVES – FULL YEAR
ADVANCED & INTERMEDIATE BAND – Advanced and Intermediate Bands are open to 7th and 8th grade students through audition and teacher placement. Performances include daytime and evening concerts. Students are required to practice regularly. All bands require a commitment for the entire year.
ORCHESTRA –Orchestra is designed for the stringed-instrument student (violin, viola, cello, bass) who desires to play in a performing organization based upon orchestral instruments. The group will play a variety of string music and will perform at evening concerts. Students are required to practice regularly. Orchestra is a year-long elective.
CHORUS – Chorus is open to all 7th & 8th grade students. This class meets daily. Concerts are held throughout the year.
STUDENT AIDE – This elective is for those wishing to help in the office, library, or classroom. Clerical jobs and errands will be performed. Grading is based on willingness to participate and ability to follow instructions. Teacher recommendations and counselor approval required. This class is a year-long commitment.
EXPLORATORY CYCLE – This course of study is developed as recommended by the California State Guidelines for Middle Schools. Exploratory cycles will offer students the opportunity to explore a variety of interests prior to entering high school. The cycles may include subjects such as drama, technology and Intro to Spanish.
