6TH GRADE BASIC EDUCATION
LANGUAGE ARTS – This course is a LITERATURE BASED, MEANING CENTERED, INTEGRATED program in accordance with the California state framework. Listening, speaking, reading and writing activities will be emphasized. Process skills will be taught in the context of the authentic language activities.
SOCIAL STUDIES – This sixth grade course focuses on the in-depth study of the history of ancient civilizations from Early People through the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. Included in this study are the early societies of the Near East and Africa, the ancient Hebrew civilization, Greece, Rome and the classical civilizations of India and of China.
6TH GRADE MATHEMATICS
MATH PLACEMENT- Student placement for the 6th grade math will be determined by their Spring MAPs scores and CST Scores.
6TH GRADE SCIENCE
EARTH SCIENCE - General topics covered in Earth Science are Earth's Systems & Cycles, Resources, Oceans, Atmosphere, Plate Tectonics and Ecology. The students will learn proper laboratory behavior, investigation, reading, writing, and study skills. The “Too Good for Drugs” program will be introduced.
ELECTIVES – FULL YEAR
6TH GRADE BAND – Band offers the student of instrumental music an opportunity to further develop musical skills and to broaden the musical experience through rehearsal and performances. Students will perform at daytime and evening concerts during the year.
ORCHESTRA –Orchestra is designed for the stringed-instrument student (violin, viola, cello, bass) who desires to play in a performing organization based upon orchestral instruments. The group will play a variety of string music and will perform at evening concerts. Students are required to practice regularly. Orchestra is a year-long elective.
CHORUS – Chorus is open to all 6th grade students. Concerts are held throughout the year with evening performances as well.
EXPLORATORY CYCLE – This course of study is developed as recommended by the California State Guidelines for Middle Schools. Exploratory Cycles will offer students the opportunity to explore a variety of interests prior to entering high school. The cycles may include subjects such as drama and technology.
